Mar 15, 2020 - On to the Pacific coast
Written by Lois & John some friends and family have asked us... Costa Rica is in pretty good shape as far as the coronavirus is concerned. Right now there are 27 reported cases, and they have a very strong public health system. Anyone, including foreigners, can get tested at no charge. People are taking whatever precautions they can. for the next three nights, we will be staying at a large resort complex on the Pacific coast. It's called Punta Leona Hotel and Club. Dinner is served as a buffet. To get into the dining area, you have wash...Jump to full entry
Mar 12, 2013 - It's my birthday! Feliz Cumpleanos!
I woke up early and took a drive to Esterillos Oeste beach...it was low tide, so I could walk way out to the mermaid in the sea. I sat on the beach in solitude and wrote! When i got back for my 10am yoga, it was absolutely wonderful....1.5 hours...birds chirping, and serious core work!! I decided to take surf lessons, so Alejandro hooked me up. Necia went with me... adding photographer to my translator/negotiator companion! Oh, also party planner as she bought a birthday banner and cake, when I was riding the waves! Surfing was a...Jump to full entry
Nov 26, 2011 - Taking it easy on the beach in Jaco
Our first full day in Costa Rica we decided to take it easy and hang out at the beach. Our trip from Atenas, expertly navigated by Brad (Mr. Veronica), was our first real experience with the cultural and surroundings. Best to stay out of the way when Brad is navigating - no questions, no second guessing - just follow. You'll always end up in the right place. Throughout the drive, and throughout the trip, frequent conversations and laughter filled the airways between our two-way radios. However, Brad kept his focus! Our drive to Jaco (Playa...Jump to full entry
Oct 9, 2011 - Jaco Beach
Hi All, Yesterday we caught the bus from Quepos/Manuel Antonio to the surfing mecca of Jaco, about an hour up the Pacific coast. We've spent most of our time here chillin' in hammocks and laying on the beach soaking up some last sun before we head home to frigid October in Alberta. We've booked a horseback beach tour for tomorrow morning and Meg's over-the-moon excited for it!!! ("BEACHES!!!!!) Thom enjoyed the last horseback ride and is looking forward to it (I think; he says he is...?). Anyways, we're stoked for that! Aside from that,...Jump to full entry
Feb 1, 2011 - Pura Vida!!!!!!
Hey there m'friends! It's Tuesday and we had to leave a dear friend behind... Thanks for a great time Greg! We left The Sandpiper Inn at 8:00 am to take the "greyline" transport from Hermosa Beach to Arenal. We drove for 3 hrs to Liberia, where we had a bus change... which was news to us until we seen our back backs on the parking lot behind the transport bus when we returned from the lil' roadside "cafe. We asked someone with a "greyline" shirt on what happened.... Nobody speaks English by the way, and when they say they do, they really...Jump to full entry
Jan 31, 2011 - Happy Anniversary to us!!!!
Holla!!!! Another day in paradise! We woke up early to go fishing! I wasn't able to talk hector into leaving me behind because he might actually catch something and who's going to take pictures????? Anyways, just getting back from our fishing trip, I'm glad I went. We started off with a nice cup of coffee, some sweet bread and conversation. Greg took us to the port where a "boat taxi" took us to the fishing boat. Much like the ones we've used in the past in Mexico... Two "boys" Jose (an 18 year old local and owner of the boat) and Carlos...Jump to full entry

Mar 12, 2009 - One night in Jaco
We took our last Spanish class today and hit the road in a rental car. It took over 2 hours to get the paperwork from the rental car place but we got a 4x4 and were off. We learned about Costa Rican time as we got stuck in a few road repair traffic jams. At one we waited so long we shut the car off and cracked a beer. We waited 20 minutes in the dark waiting for our turn to pass. We then started seeing billboard after billboard for Subway, Quiznos, KFC and we knew we were almost in Jaco. At dinner we watched Uconn in their tripple overtime...Jump to full entry
Jan 17, 2009 - Exploring Jaco Beach Town
Regina contacted a friend we acquired last year in San Juan del Sur, Nica. We will stay at his home after his son leaves tomorrow. We call it Red Dog's swinging door. Today we met a guy at breakfast, Marty Mihok from New Jersey. He told us of his travels on bicycle tours via barges in Europe. Later John "Red Dog" Mitchell took us to El Bohio beach bar, Clarita's for happy hour and sunset, and finally Copacabana Bar. He will pick us up tomorrow to move to his house near the Butterfly Sanctuary and Canopy Tour.Jump to full entry
Jan 7, 2009 - Samara to Jaco, Costa Rica
Our booking for the apartment in San Jose is for tomorrow but we thought we would leave Samara today and make our way over to the mainland. We are not sure how bad the roads might be on the way to the ferry or how busy it may be getting a spot on the ferry. As far as the roads on the Nicoya Peninsula, they are notoriously bad from all accounts we have heard. This is actually a popular place to rent a 4 x 4 and go exploring on these roads. There is a road (or perhaps several roads depending on who you talk to and which map you refer to) from...Jump to full entry
Oct 28, 2008 - Zip Lining!!!!
Today Kim and I played daredevils and participated in something called Tranopy. It is a combination of a very peaceful ride in a tram up hundreds of feet into the mountains, and a pulse-pounding ride back down the same mountains on a zip line! To make it more interesting, half way through the activity we got caught in a driving monsoon...Jump to full entry
Feb 29, 2008 - Happy Hour and Casa Tejas
I had plans to meet Red Dog at Clarita's for Happy Hour. There he was chugging down the street to pick me up as I was walking to the beach. Clarita's is a gringo hang-out. They advertise how attractive their staff is. My favorite waitress Magi waited on us. Red Dog invited me back to his house for yellow fin tuna, caught that day. Again he demonstrated what a good host he can be and served the tuna raw and grilled with plenty of wasabi. Red Dog's house is called Casa Tejas and located in Las Monas, a gated community of 7 houses. They...Jump to full entry
