Apr 11, 2014 - Costa Rica - Day 1

Last Thursday I was told of an opening in the birding trip to Costa Rica and that I would love it. I was going to catsit for a couple who were going on the trip, so, after working things out with another woman willing to catsit, and finding out I could get on the same flight out of Miami with the other travelers, I was psyched! I went a day early, like the others, but instead of staying in a motel, I took the opportunity to see Jeanne & Laurie one more time and they took me to the airport on the 10th. One of the 16 travelers had a seizure...

Mar 26, 2014 - Day 2

Today we left our hotel and travel to a gold museum in the heart of San Jose. After the tour went to lunch at a quaint little place in San Jose where Aunt Carole and Uncle Bob joined the group. We then traveled to the place we would be staying for the next two nights at a lodge in a rain forest. A type of monkey called "Howler Monkeys" were the main attraction as they were all over the place and just as we were told, there was no need for alarm clocks because just before dawn their howls woke everyone up. The dinner that night was right...

Mar 3, 2012 - Sarapiqui National Park

March 1, Thursday The howler monkeys woke us early so we packed up, paid the bill and headed to the dining area to sit and watch the wildlife on the river. Eventually the bar man turned the music on which is really annoying when there are so many jungle sounds you want to hear. I don't understand this constant obsession with listening to man made music. Although I love that too, sometimes it's nice to just listen to nature. Howler monkeys, birds, frogs and insects create their own chorus. Our luggage packed into the boat in the pouring...

Jan 2, 2012 - Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

Apparently the Explore initial meetings almost never happen (once in 6 trips for Mike person, and never in 3 for me), so I really don’t know why they tell everyone they actually have to arrive in time for them. I could have taken the non-stop flight on Sunday and not blown a whole day with nothing to do. Ah well. Lesson learned. We departed at 10am, heading North. Almost immediately we crossed some mountains blanketed in clouds, and got into the greener bits of Costa Rica. Man what a difference from San Jose! We reached Sarapiqui, which is...

May 15, 2011 - Day 7

Woke up, had breakfast (rice and beans!) and went for our hike and the guide pointed out things of interest. In the afternoon, we went to a huge double waterfall 2 mins away and swam in the big plunge pool. Then did a spot of tombstoning :-P. Just before tea, the rain started. I have enever heard anthing louder! Thankfully, it stopped in time for my full body massage! it was amazing. Had a bit of a party as it was one of the guides birthdays, then bed.

May 14, 2011 - Day 6

Got a boat and then a mini bus to Rara Avis base camp, where we put our essentials into day bags all got into the tractor trailer and proceeded to get dragged up a mountain by the tractor for the next 4 hours. It was quite an experience! Our cabins had no electricity and the main building only has some for 5 hours a day, so it was very rural! We had tea (rice and beans for a change!) then i went with 5 others on a night walk through the rainforest. As our previous guide had told us not to touch anything as there are snakes, scorpians,...

Mar 29, 2011 - Pictures.......

Bought my bus ticket to San Jose today, that'll be a long ride! Mostly surfing, sun and little study at this point. Zip lining is on the radar for tomorrow and a massage Thursday. Looks like I am starting to think crazy, want to go home to cooler temperatures and some RAIN; I know, sure that will change in a hurry once I get home...lol. That frog is bigger than my hand with my fingers spread apart, like to see the size of the bird thats gets him!
