Feb 26, 2016 - Day 7

On the other side of the Rio Peje, our lodge is situated next to is the North Section of Braulio Carrillo National Park that was established in 1982. This park is off limits to the general public to allow for regeneration. The small town here, Magsasay has black pepper groves and was once a sizeable exporter until the end of the Soviet Union which left India, a #1 exporter without its market. As a result prices were lowered to levels below production costs ending the exportation of black pepper from Magsasay. In 1996, this area reforested...

Feb 25, 2016 - Day 6

After breakfast we took our 1 hour boat ride back to Pavanol to catch our bus. We travelled along 2 rivers: Toruguero and La Suerte. Along the way, we saw 2 big herons : the Bare-throated Tiger Heron and the Great Blue Heron. We had a very bumpy half hour ride on a gravel road until we hit the paved road. We stopped to see a "Chiquita" Banana plantation on the side of the road. They plant 2 plants/spot 1 sq. m which will mature in 8-10 months. One plant makes one bunch of bananas. As the bananas mature, the bunches are covered with...

Dec 25, 2015 - Whitewater Christmas

Christmas day was our first full day in Costa Rica and we would be heading to La Fortuna from San José. Since it’s on the way, Ro suggested we do whitewater rafting today and do activities in La Fortuna the following day. Everyone agreed, so the full group was doing rafting. We boarded our van around 730 and left San José. Past Alajuela, we stopped at a small roadside shop to pick up some breakfast. Further north, we made our first sightseeing stop at La Paz Waterfall, a beautiful 120-foot roadside waterfall along Route 126 just past the La...

Apr 11, 2014 - Costa Rica - Day 1

Last Thursday I was told of an opening in the birding trip to Costa Rica and that I would love it. I was going to catsit for a couple who were going on the trip, so, after working things out with another woman willing to catsit, and finding out I could get on the same flight out of Miami with the other travelers, I was psyched! I went a day early, like the others, but instead of staying in a motel, I took the opportunity to see Jeanne & Laurie one more time and they took me to the airport on the 10th. One of the 16 travelers had a seizure...

Mar 26, 2014 - Day 2

Today we left our hotel and travel to a gold museum in the heart of San Jose. After the tour went to lunch at a quaint little place in San Jose where Aunt Carole and Uncle Bob joined the group. We then traveled to the place we would be staying for the next two nights at a lodge in a rain forest. A type of monkey called "Howler Monkeys" were the main attraction as they were all over the place and just as we were told, there was no need for alarm clocks because just before dawn their howls woke everyone up. The dinner that night was right...

Mar 3, 2012 - Sarapiqui National Park

March 1, Thursday The howler monkeys woke us early so we packed up, paid the bill and headed to the dining area to sit and watch the wildlife on the river. Eventually the bar man turned the music on which is really annoying when there are so many jungle sounds you want to hear. I don't understand this constant obsession with listening to man made music. Although I love that too, sometimes it's nice to just listen to nature. Howler monkeys, birds, frogs and insects create their own chorus. Our luggage packed into the boat in the pouring...

Jan 2, 2012 - Sarapiqui, Costa Rica

Apparently the Explore initial meetings almost never happen (once in 6 trips for Mike person, and never in 3 for me), so I really don’t know why they tell everyone they actually have to arrive in time for them. I could have taken the non-stop flight on Sunday and not blown a whole day with nothing to do. Ah well. Lesson learned. We departed at 10am, heading North. Almost immediately we crossed some mountains blanketed in clouds, and got into the greener bits of Costa Rica. Man what a difference from San Jose! We reached Sarapiqui, which is...
