Apr 3, 2014 - Monteverde, Costa Rica

Another travel day today. First a short minibus ride to the ferry, 60 min ferry ride, and then another minibus for an hour to the Costa Rica border. The border crossing was a rather lengthy affair, as you wandered from place to place, forms getting filled out in triplicate, bags scanned and about 90 mins later we were in Costa Rica. Yet another minibus, stopping along the way for lunch, we eventually arrived in Monteverde around 4:00pm.

Jun 5, 2008 - Monteverde, Costa Rica

The border crossing today was ridiculous. We had to process our passports 5 times (3 times in Nicaragua and 2 times in Costa Rica) and we had to walk with our luggage across the border which was about 500 meters. Then we paid someone so that we could jump the line on the Costa Rica side and not have to wait in the hot sun. We were covered in mud and dirt and we were hungry and tired, so everyone was glad to chip in for that (even though it was really unfair to the huge line of people who were waiting in line). Anyway, we finally made it...

Mar 10, 2008 - Monteverde

I know my writing style isn’t very interesting to read – I am writing quickly trying to play catch up. Some brief snippets from today. ~ We call Jack our “little accident waiting to happen”. No matter what we do or where we go, he takes the road less traveled. I learned today from my mom that she saw Jack putting his hand down a hole in the hanging bridges walk in Arenal. Jack is just curious – he didn’t know that tarantulas live in the wholes. Instead of walking on the path, he walks in the plants and bushes. He doesn’t walk on the...

Jan 23, 2008 - The Best Day EVER!!!

Today Sandy and I decided to things away from the group. Most of the excursions planned are adventure ones and the nature ones..which are great...but I really wanted to do this coffee tour and Sandy wanted to do a cheese factory tour and then we would fill the rest of our day just chilling. At 9am we head to the Mondeverde Cheese Factory. Actually founded by quakers who were escaping the war draft in the United States in 1948. They came to Costa Rica as Canada was to cold and in Mexico you had to be a Mexican citizen to own land. They built...

Jan 22, 2008 - Horse back riding and the road the Devil himself won't go on!

Tuesday Morning up nice early we head out of La Fortuna to meet a boat to take us and our luggage off to Monteverde. Across the river is where we will meet our horses. I am dreading this experience..but this trip isn't about avoiding the horses it's about gettin on that horse and riding into the sunset...or not dying. We greet the Caballeros (cowboys) who start pairing off the horses to people. One guy in our group is about 6'5 and 230lbs and will not be able to go on the horses cuz I don't know if you have seen Costa Rican horses...

Jul 2, 2007 - Monteverde Cloud Forest

Back again... Arrived in Monteverde after a bone shaking ride along what can only be described as a dirt track with bolders everywhere... Thankfully, Marvin our driver lowered the pressure on the Toyota's tyres to make it less painful...but after 22Km we had loose fillings & Fi was grateful for wearing a bra that day ;-) Ok... so then checked in to the basic Quezal Inn... then dinner at the wonderful El Campesino (The Countryman) steakhouse. Monteverde is quite high & the clouds really hemmed in, but then what follwed was the "Mother of all...

Jul 1, 2007 - Santa Elena / Monteverde

Buenos Noches, SO...we are now in Santa Elena and Monteverde. We are staying at a great little place called Pension Santa Elena. The owners are amazing and have really helped us with our plan for our last week. Which is max and relax! Today we did 5 hours of hiking! Yes, that is right 5. My knees and calves are feeling the burn right about now. The hike was through the cloud forest on the Santa Elena reserve and suspension bridges. We also had an amazing dinner and a lovely siesta. Since we last talked we were in Arenal and we did the...
