Aug 3, 2017 - Wax Palm Trees and a Hike in the Valley

Sunny & warm again, the streak continues! While Jean was preparing for the day, I sat outside in the courtyard trying to connect to the internet. I was only partially successful. Ron sat outside with me and was reminiscing about some places in New Jersey, such as Pal's Log Cabin, Newark Italian hot dogs, and other places. After breakfast, we departed at 8:00 for our hiking day near Salento. The main roads in this region are in great shape and supply a smooth ride. The region itself is very middle/upper class. The houses and businesses look...

Jan 21, 2013 - Eje Cafetero - Salento

Aug 11, 2012 - Salento

Ok salento. Salento is a little town in the mountains. It is known for its coffee farms and the forest of wax palms. The biggest palm trees in the world. I had heard it was a great town to get stuck in and I planned to do that to relax a bit. I had heard of a hostel called tralala. I emailed them but they said they didn't take reservations. Anyways the bus ride there was quite long and in order to save time I was supposed to tell the bus driver to drop me off at an intersection on the highways then cross the highway to catch the bus to...

Dec 27, 2007 - Salento

After the "Africa-like" Pacific coast I returned to Colombia, you could say. From Cali I went to Armenia where I spent two nights. Armenia itself is not of much interest, but nearby was the Parque Nacional Del Cafe, a Disneyland style themepark dedicated to the history, growing, harvesting, and exportation of coffee. It is appropriately located right in the heart of Colombia's coffee growing district. The theme park was a good enough way to pass the day, but for me the highlight was the "show del cafe", an incredible folkloric show. The...

Jul 29, 2007 - Salento and the Valle del Cocora

We arrived in Salento after long day on three different buses. Although the scenery was at times breathtaking, it was still a brutal day. Salento gets a little crowded during the weekends when locals from Cali, Manizales and Medellin come piling in this picturesque mountain town. There are a number of fine hikes in, and around the town. Some to the local Coffee Fincas (farms), and another to the Cocoa Valley (Valle Cocoa). The town is also famous for its trout. Every restaurant serve a variety of trout dishes that are all incredible. We...
