Jun 27, 2014 - Days 313 to 315 - Cartagena, Colombia

After a four hour (air conditioned…yippee!) bus journey, I arrived in Cartagena at 2.00pm on Wednesday 25th June and had a pleasant surprise; it was not as hot as I had feared. That said, it was still above 30oC, so warm enough! I found the hostel after being charged an excessive taxi fare (again!) and checked in to find that the dorms had a/c at night…what a result after fans only in Santa Marta. I strolled out to have a look-see and find some food in the late afternoon; eating my set menu of soup and chicken, I suddenly heard someone call...

Apr 27, 2014 - Taganga to Cartagena, Colombia

Thursday 24th April 2014 Taganga, Colombia It’s a rest day today. Up late and had breakfast then updated the blog and chatted to other people in the group, sat around the pool for most of the day, went for a brief walk in the afternoon, then had a rest later in the day, then out for dinner with some others to a really nice restaurant. We had a couple of cocktails and a very good meal then home to bed at around 11:30pm. It was a hot day today, very dry about 36°C. They badly need rain in this town. It hasn’t rained here for seven months and...

Apr 19, 2014 - Cartagena. Colombia

Day 2 of Cruise – Cartegena, Colombia – April 19, 2014 After leaving Miami, we spent two days at sea before reaching our first port of call, Cartagena, Colombia. Friday night after our first feeding opportunity, we saw our first evening show and review of some of the acts we would see during the next few days. After the show, we went to our cabin to unpack when Jean discovered her box of wine had been confiscated while my rum made it through undetected (and that was totally unfair!) I had disguised the rum by putting it in plastic water...

Feb 27, 2014 - Back to Bogota 27-28 Feb

Late 27 and 28 Feb. Leaving Cartagena, Bogota and back to Havana The last day at Cartagena was another one of lost time. We had to check out at 1pm, leave for the airport at 3 and the flight was at 5;30. After strolling about the town in the heat and having a coffee Sharon, Allen and I decided to go back to the hotel, cool off and shower before vacating the rooms. Then I hung around in the cool rooftop restaurant reading until departure time. The last group meal would have been better the night before in Cartagena, but it ws decided to have...

Feb 24, 2014 - Cartagena

I did not opt to go to the Rosario Islands for snorkelling and eating and not being able to come back when you want. After a leisurely start I went back to look at the handicraft shops we had visited on our first day, all laid out in former prison cells used by the Spaniards. I dithered over s lot of things, including emerald rings, gave up and went for lunch in a vegetarian place near the one I couldn't find yesterday - then today found it, but too late. Had an amazing lunch for only £3'ish - compared to a bottle of water in this town that...

Feb 23, 2014 - Cartagena Tour and optional afternoon

Our hotel is very comfortable in a colonial building in the heart of the old town which makes moving around very easy. It's very hot here, even when we arrived last night around 10pm it must have been around 25 degrees. There seems to be a constant wind off the Caribbean which cools things down somewhat although our morning city tour got very hot towards the end. We started off in the bus to go to the highest point - probably 150 mts to see a church on a hill - reminiscent of last Sunday but without the crowds and bazaar. On the way we...

Feb 22, 2014 - Armenia then afternoon flight to Cartagena via Bogota

Rather a wasted day. It started off very slowly watching and photographing the many colourful birds in the garden while waiting for our 10am departure. The day was to start with a city tour of Armenia a one-eyed town which suffered an enormous earthquake and has been rebuilt - nothing of interest although the local guide did his best. Once in the town he took us to a square where the tax office is (!), then up a pedestrian shopping street to another square of no remarkable character and back to the bus. We then went to the gold museum,...

Dec 6, 2013 - Time for Reflection

6 DEC 13 – At Sea, Somewhere in the Southern Caribbean. Day 15. Wow! What a cruise it has been, so far. We have now visited three countries we had never expected to see – four, if you count Panama; although that would be something like calling a two hour stay in the transit lounge in Dehli a visit to India! But what a transit! Good as it was to visit the other ports, none could compare to the experience of transitting the Panama Canal. The concept of taking a 91,000 tonne ship and moving it 80 kilometres overland – and over mountains - in...

Dec 5, 2013 - A Day of Monks and Ancient Spain

5 DEC 13 – Cartagena, Columbia. Day 14. So, our sojourn through Central America has come to an end, apart from the two sea days to get us back to Miami. We docked in Cartegena at 09:00 am, an hour ahead of the original schedule. We hoped it would not interfere with our private tour, which had been booked to fit our original arrival time of 10:00 am, but we need not have worried. Our tour guide, Dora the Explorer, was there to meet us when we stepped off the ship. Our little tour group was created online (on Cruise Critic) a couple of months...

Feb 13, 2013 - Cartagena & Playa Blanca

Dec 13, 2012 - Cartagena and Colon

12-12-12 Cartagena Colombia The ship is now on level sea. Being on land in Cartagena yesterday was great. The ship, bouncing through 10 to 12 foot waves, for 2 days, was getting to be a great challenge. For those concerned about my balance issue…..I’ve had no problems. Coming out of my cabin in the morning, on my way to breakfast, I knew we were in trouble when I noticed all of the “barf bags” strategically placed in the halls. AND, they were well used. Cartagena was 98 degrees with 90% humidity! We walked for 2 and ½ hours and were...
