Jan 14, 2017 - Colombia – Medellin to Cartagena

Our last day in Medellin and I will miss it – I quite like this city and could certainly spend more time here! Following breakfast we take a walk a little further into El Poblado district. Within a few blocks there are streets lined with disco, after disco and bar; guess we found the party district! Everything was closed at this early daytime hour except for a couple of restaurants serving breakfast and a Juan Valdez Cafe. We stopped to try the coffee and it was excellent. Back to the hotel – it was pool time, the morning clouds were giving...

Aug 4, 2016 - Trip Home

We rolled out of bed just in time to get breakfast at the hotel. We are both running out of cash and don’t want to get any more since we leave Colombia tonight. So, free breakfast it is. It’s actually pretty good with some traditional Colombian food along with fruit, bread, and eggs. I thought we would wander a little bit, but the AC in the room felt so good that we took most of the morning checking email, packing, and getting cleaned up for the trip back. We checked out at noon, just in time. We had to pay a tourist tax. B had been...

Aug 3, 2016 - Getsemani

I spent the morning wandering Getsemani. B wanted to go for a run, and since he has nearly 30 years on me, I decided not to try to keep up. Walking in Getsemani seemed like a better plan. Getsemani is actually the neighborhood where our hotel is located...just a short walk to the City Center--the Old Walled City. It has been a very run down part of town and not always safe, but their has been a revival of Getsemani in recent years and it is becoming a tourist stop on its own. I think the most unique feature fo Getsemani is the street art...

Aug 2, 2016 - Isla de Rosario

Yesterday we reserved a trip to one of the private islands in the Islas del Rosario. It is a string of islands that runs out into the Caribbean from Cartagena and folks here have told us that it is as much a part of the adventure of seeing the city as the Old Towne. A bus picked us up at 8:30 a.m. And drove us around for 30 minutes to get us t the docks that are a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Oh well, got to meet some nice people. The boat jetted along the sea, racing two or three other boats also headed out to the islands. This is big...

Aug 1, 2016 - Around Bogota

OK, I've fallen in love with the Colombian pop cycles--paletas. They come in all kinds of flavors. A lot of them have fruit in them. And they are not like the kind you buy at the grocery store or make out of kool-aid. Really yummy. My suitcase finally arrived last night. The clothes I had worn on the plane were heavy and dripping with sweat. So happy to be in new, lighter clothes...albeit still dripping with sweat. After my morning paleta--coconut--B and I got a hop on, hop off bus tour. The first stop was at the Castella de San Felipe,...

Jul 31, 2016 - Old Town

After breakfast, I put on the same clothes I've been wearing since Friday evening and headed out to explore Cartagena. I talked to a guy about taking us on a tour, but Basilio didn't really want to. But, the guy followed us around, chatting us up. I was pretty content taking pictures of this colonial Spanish city. The guide gave Basilio a map of the city, and we started following a self-guided walk around the Old Town. We didn't really make too much progress as I kept wanting to stop to look around a little shop, or take a picture, or get...

Jul 30, 2016 - The Long, Long Journey to Cartagena

Basilio and I were scheduled on the red-eye to Miami, then to Bogota, and finally to Cartagena. My friend Lisa picked us up at 8:30 p.m. It seemed way too early to leave for a midnight flight, but I have grown more and more anxious about trips out of LAX since I moved out to the desert. LA freeways are clearing by that time of night, so we hit little traffic...until we got past the 405. When you reach the 105/405 intersection, you are basically at the LAX airport, so we thought we'd arrived. Suddenly traffic slowed to a drunken crawl. We...

Today it off to the mud volcano about 50km northeast of Cartagena, on the banks of the Cienaga del Totumo. a large lake, but at this time of the year it is mostly dry. The mud is to have therapeutic properties and it quite an experience. LOL After climbing out it is off to the dry lake for a washing by the local women using water from the lake, they have dug a hole in the lake bed to reach the water table, after a good scrubbing and rise you head back to bus. A 45 minute ride to a beach near Cartagena for lunch, choice of chicken or fish,...
