May 16, 2010 - Rice and Shine - Sunrise over Yuan Yang

In order to see the second and third major sight in Yuan Yang I had to get up really early – at 5 am my alarm clock woke me up, since at 5:30 I would be picked up by my personal minibus taking me to the best spot to see the sun rising over the rice terraces. At first I was afraid, lest we might have not started early enough, but eventually the timing turned out to be just perfect. May 15, 2010 - La Familia de Yuan Yang

After the hike through the “Tiger Leaping Gorge” I spent one more day in Lijiang to do some laundry, update my trip journal and to relax. On the 13th at 9 am in the morning I took the train to Kunming which arrived there at 8:45 pm. But luckily our translating friends explained that the drivers didn’t want to proceed to the next destination as the roads were too dangerous. At this point it was raining quite...

Oct 7, 2009 - Race to the Sunset - Day 20

We went to get the bus to Yuanyang (rice terraces). When we arrived at the bus station we found ourselves bombarded with people trying to sell us tickets, but were grateful when we found someone who actually wanted to help us and they directed us to the correct bus. It was a long, very bumpy bus ride out of the city. It was very beautiful driving through this part of China, lots of mountains, scenery and farm land. At times it was scary driving up the mountain. We met two American girls on the bus, they are studying in China and speak...
