HI! We arrived in Lijiang after a couple of hours being jolted around a minibus relieved to be in a new setting. ... Nick didn't mention that we were both sick in Dali so spent more time looking at the four walls of our room than the sights! Lijiang was nice, in fact incredibly similar to Dali and still loads of cameratastic Chinese tourists as Spring festival was now in full swing. ... Whats there to say? We looked around, hung out, ate nice food and packed our bags ready for our 4 day trek to Tiger leaping gorge.HI! The latter are the nearest to a western breakfast that we usually get! The hotel lady advised on the whereabouts of the petrol station and the direction of Lijiang. ... The drive to Lijiang was magical and is a definite contender for the best drive of the rally along with Taxkorgan down to Kashgar and the Hunza valley in Pakistan. ... At the top, the trees were all fir trees and the ground flattened as we turned a corner to see the valley with Lijiang and a dammed lake below it. ... A simple descent and excellent route into Lijiang centre led us to asking the way only 200 yards from the hotel and we arrived at mid-day. ... The only downside was that we had missed a morning in Lijiang and had little to eat, so our second priority (the first being to dump a huge heap of laundry with housekeeping)was to head into the old town and wander through the pretty streets that run alongside streams to find a restaurant for lunch. ...

Saturday 17th September Et up with Dongy and jumped in the minibus to Lijiang, a further 500 metres up at about 2500 above sea level. ... The trip was 3 hours of windy mountain roads, and what made it worse was I had to injure 3 hours, about 10 episodes of this cheesy Chinese war drama, with the speaker right in my ear, not happy.Saturday 17th September Et up with Dongy and jumped in the minibus to Lijiang, a further 500 metres up at about 2500 above sea level. ... Oh my god what have they done to this place?! Lijiang is now tourist central. ... Having instructed the driver not to let us off inside the park, they try to charge us a Y40 entry fee for the preservation [destruction, more like] of the old town of Lijiang, regardless of the fact that we're actually leaving it and that we weren't charged anything when we did enter (on a major highway). ... They say that we will have to get off the bus if we don't pay, so I ask if we have to stay in Lijiang forever unless we pay Y40 to be allowed to leave. ... So we resign ourselves to staying in Baoshan and travelling back to Lijiang the following day. ... The only good thing about Lijiang, apart from all the pizza restaurants, is that there are well stocked copy CD shops here, although you do have to be careful what you are buying. ...

Ni Hao! Quite an epic bus journey from Laos into China. Huge mountains up to 5500m near the wonderful historic town of Lijiang provide wonderful ground for treks. ... Needless to say, Chris got us up the hills pretty quick for a trek to the famous Tiger Leaping gorge -a 3000m gorge with the Yangzee rushing down at grade 6 or more rapids below terrifyng cliff edges! Our 2 day adventure turned into 4 days after a megga DEB (double - ender bug!).Ni Hao! Quite an epic bus journey from Laos into China. The ride really was not all that bad. We made it to Lijiang around 7 PM and checked into our "hotel". ... Lijiang is a really cool town. ... Time for the bus trip back to Lijiang again. ... Then we found out the flight from Lijiang had stopped and that we would have to travel back to Dali in order to catch a flight from there. ... Ni hau!!!! Another three hours in a bus and we were further north, in Lijiang, a delightful maze of cobbled streets, rickety old wooden buildings and gushing canals. ... Much of newer Lijiang was levelled, but the traditional Naxi architercture held up quite well. ... The Chinese government took note and sank millions into rebuilding most of Lijiang county with traditional Naxi architecture, replacing cement with cobblestone and wood. ... The United Nations was so impressed by the survival of Lijiang that it placed all of Lijiang county on its World Heritage Site list (Patrimonio de la Humanidad). ... Another thing worth mentioning about Lijiang is that it is bloody difficult to leave the place. ...

DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT The last place anyone would want to be in the rain is "Elephant Hill". The views were stunning, overlookng the valley of Lijiang you could see the distinct split from old town, to new city. ... All in all a lovely day in Lijiang. ... After yesterday's easy day we decided to get rid of some energy and take a bike ride around Lijiang with the main intention of getting as close as possible to Jade Snow Mountain 35km's away. ... After a further ride around the village and a stop for footy with local kids we headed back towards Lijiang as the day was quickly passing by. ...
