The next day Susanna and I bussed to Kunming, ten hours or so of potholed roads. ... On the way back we were pulled over by the Police for some reason, and when we got back to Kunming, for some (perhaps associated) reason the bus went to what was like a very crowded hospital (with the biggest traditional chinese medicine shop I have seen yet, and I have seen hundreds now) and everyone went and sat in one of many waiting room. ... I've just been resting up in Kunming at a very cheap, but very (amazingly) clean hostel, and exploring the city a bit by bike. ... Kunming is very modern and tidy - looks a bit like they are trying to create a western style city. ...

Kunming, capital city of Yunnan, is the beginning of the end of China for us, as we will spend the rest of our time in China in Yunnan province. ... The Chinese government has gone full circle from suppressing these cultures, their languages and religions decades ago, to today encouraging their preservation and, most particularly, in stressing their value as tourist attractions! Today we had a day to waste in Kunming and went to see a large display by a lake south of the city of sample villages of many of these ethnic groups, quite a well-done affair given our general disdain for such attractions. ... Tomorrow, we're off to Dali, centre of the Bai population who number over 1 million, for our first taste of the real thing.Kunming, capital city of Yunnan, is the beginning of the end of China for us, as we will spend the rest of our time in China in Yunnan province. ...
