Next stop Dali staying at one of the best places yet - The Lily Pad at $16pn. Great room, great service and, one night, even a themed dinner of river fish hotpot for the residents at $4.50 each. Stayed 3 days but not long enough to explore this lovely town. Dali is another large town split between old and character-filled (for the tourists) and very new and ugly (for the workers) sections. Lots of long walks, bus ride around Erhai Lake which took all day, another long bus ride to Shaping (30km north) where we were told the local market was...

Dec 29, 2008 - Hekou, China / Lao Cai, Vietnam

by Lora We took an overnight sleeper bus from Kunming to Hekou, in order to cross the border into Vietnam. I had never heard of an overnight sleeper bus; let's just say it was an experience we'd rather not repeat :) - we'll take the sitting up variety any day. The bus dropped us off one block away from the border and we walked across the bridge into Vietnam without a hitch. This was only the second border that either of us had crossed on foot (US/Mexico being the other) and it was a pretty cool experience. Unfortunately, we couldn't take...

Jun 30, 2005 - Hekou - China

Chinese customs was a breeze. Everything was so exceptionally ordered and efficient that we were through in about 5 minutes. I got told to straighten up my act as I was not standing in a straight single-file line. As we strolled out of the border office, we were given the hurry up by a runaway cart piled unfeasibly high with cartons full of produce and being pulled by four men who had briefly lost control.
