Skipping Stones

Oct 2, 2004 - Wet, wet, wet

In Kunming the train station said no tickets whatsoever, so I paid a travel agent five quid extra for a rare hard sleeper to Dali City. ... My train was a slow old one though, full of snorers, smokers, babies, etc, and I did not get much sleep, on my second night in a row in a train, and now here I am in Dali Old City, having got a taxi from the New City. ... So dead early I arrived at the MCA Guesthouse in Dali, waking everyone up, my base for at least the next couple of days. ... Caught the bus up to Dali yesterday. ... I joined up with some other backpackers to try and find some accommodation, and then we realised that we were still 30km from Dali itself. ... The signs on the bus and the tickets all say Dali, but they drop you in the nearby town of Xiaguan - now I remembered the note in the guidebook. ... We finally got a taxi to Dali, through some really dodgy looking dark dirt backroads - so the driver could avoid the toll road I think. ... The accommodation is basic but at NZ$2 per night who's complaining! Dali is an old walled town (although it seems to sprawl well past the walls these days) with some really nice old architecture and big gateways at each end. ...

Adrian's OE 2004

Nov 11, 2002 - Dali

The old city of Dali is sandwiched between a large, ear-shaped lake called Erhai Hu and the impressive Cang Shan moutain range which rises to 4000 meters. ... The rain and mist finally cleared, giving us one sunny day to enjoy Cang Shan, the mountain towering over the town of Dali. ... Dali held a tremendous amount of charm for Adrian and Robin as there were more fun things for them to do than anywhere else we have stayed. ... All in all, Dali is going to be a hard act to follow! We're off to Lijiang, a city on the edge of Tibet about 3 hours north of Dali. ...
