Jun 28, 2007 - Chinese Food
Wandering around Dali one morning, we find a huge, bustling market. ... For dinner that night, we get a recommendation for an authentic Chinese place where residents of Dali eat; so far all we've seen in the town have been tourist spots selling veal marsala and pizza. ... I know I suggested our next stop would be Kunming but getting off the train in Kunming at about 6am a few days ago we decided ( I say we but really i blame Julie) to come back to Kunming later and jump straight into another 5 hour bus ride to the smaller town of Dali. ... So 5 hours, an hour wandering around town to find the local bus to Dali itself (the long distance bus cunningly doesnt actually drop you off in the place you think they will) and then half an hour crammed into another bus barely able to move, we got to Old Dali. ... Dali itself is a small old walled town, a few years ago it was probably more like Pingyao, but the city walls are not so complete and the town is a few years further down the road of developing tourism, so more upmarket shops, people hassling you in the street, very westernised cafe's and restaurants. ...

Sep 30, 2006 - Hello Dali
We experienced our first hard bed overnight train ride from Yangshuo to Dali. ... Old Dali is an ancient walled city, with beautiful temple like structures at each point of entrance (north, south, east & west). ... Our first Dali day we spent hiking up a nicely designed, concrete stair pathway to a mountain park. ... The next day we rented mountain bikes, boarded a boat (after long negotiations about the price), crossed Er Hui lake and biked back to Dali along the lake. ... As it was getting late, we shortened the trip by hopping on another boat back across the lake, dropping us around 20 kilos from Dali. ...

Aug 13, 2006 - The other Dali...
Up until recently, the only Dali I was aware of was of the artistic type, you know, the Spanish artist with the Oedipus complex and an incessant need to paint melting clocks in surreal settings. ... Turns out the other Dali is equally as interesting (well maybe not quite), but it is a very nice town nestled in the foothills of eastern Tibet. ... Again, Dali is much larger than anticipated, and contains a fairly well preserved old town, however, Lijang is probably a bit more picturesque. ...
