It's cool when I get off the train. Turpan train station is therefore thoughtfully located 58km north of town, although that does make it 72km more convenient than Dunhuang's. ... The only catch, as it turned out, was that the driver wanted me to engage him for a day tour of the sights around Turpan. ... Sep 29, 2004 - Dunhuang, legal again in Urumqi & Turpan
Yet another 5. Once there it was easier than I could have hoped as I completed the form to the babe of visa officers, paid my money (just over a tenner) and was told to come back at 1pm :-) Happy and legal once again I headed for Turpan by bus thru a great mix of scenery from flat desert with snow capped mountains not too far away, then black jagged rocks finally changing to red sandstone rocks and back to flat desert before getting into Turpan and taking residence in the bus station hotel . ...

Across the great Taklamantan desert, lives Turpan, a scorched city in the centre of Xinjiang, China's biggest and least populated province. ... We sadly left them in Kashgar but luckily saw them again here in Turpan - it was such a pleasant surprise to see some friendly faces again on the Silk Road!
