From Kyrgyzstan, We travelled to Kashgar, a city in which the Muslim Turk minority - the Uyghur - are still the prominent influence. ... The Uygher are a most handsome people - indeed our Han Chinese local guide lamented the fact that intermarriage between the Han and the Uygher is so hard! The Sunday markets are an institution in Kashgar - every Sunday for a thousand years livestock and other goods have been traded here. ... After a very pleasant 22 hour train ride from Turpan across the desert, underneath a large mountain range, we found ourselves in Kashgar. ... Although some of old Kashgar has been mowed down in favour of six lane roadways, much of the old city remains in twisted narrow streets, where everyone seems to have a trade. ...
