Jun 18, 2007 - Tibet Jeep Tour Day 3 - Baiju, Shigatse and Tashi Lumpo

Lazy version * Baiju Temple - Stupa checking out the valley * Old Skool flour mill!! For the engineers * Tashi Lumpo Monestary (we see a lot of monestaries on this trip) - Largest in Tibet Hard Yard Version Leaving Gyantse we headed to the Baiju temple so early the hawkers did not get a chance to badger us on the way in!! The main feature of this temple was the giant stupa that constantly checked out the town and valley below. I have no idea how the people in the town can stay sane hearing the same 30 seconds of yelling over and over and over and over and over and over (you get the idea) regardless of it being propaganda, advertising or just some weirdo that gets his kicks out of hearing his voice say the same this all the time!! Before hitting Shigatse, we stopped at a Barley miller. ... This river was pretty slow moving but it was putting out some serious power!! Tashi Lum-po Monestary in Shigatse was awesome. ... Supposedly the largest in Tibet, I easily won the monks over with my silent charm, being accepted into their world easily!! One of the great things about this monestary was the floor mural some monks were making.Lazy version * Baiju Temple - Stupa checking out the valley * Old Skool flour mill!! May 25, 2006 - Shigatse - the long wait

After a further 90km of remarkably smooth road - it seemed like days of waiting in Shigatse before attempting the pass to the himalayas - in fact it was just two, but there was no english TV and the sulk was on!! This is also the home of the eleventh panchen lama, who was abducted as a child (along with his family - all of whom are still missing) and replaced with a politically-correct version from Beijing. ... Apr 24, 2006 - Tibet Adventure - Day 3

Monday 24th. At one point we saw five police cars passing - an amazing sight in what was a very isolated area! Soon we came to "tarmac" and this lasted a whole hour into the city of Shigatse, the second largest Tibetan city. ... It's very modern but has retained a surprising Tibetan influence.Monday 24th.
