Oct 24, 2010 - Nyalam - Mt. Everest - Lhatze

Ausgeschlafen. Um 12h gings also endlich weiter, mind.

Aug 21, 2007 - Friendship Highway

"That was the greatest whiz view ever" Tanya beemed as our driver took one last snort of his mysterious yellow powder before taking back behind the wheel to finish off the remaining 20 bone crunching km of the Friendship Highway! I guess a little background detail is in order.... The Friendship Highway (which runs from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu, Nepal) is anything but friendly. The Chinese government makes it ridiculously expensive and difficult to enter Tibet in the first place, but they seem to make it surprisingly even more difficult to...

Apr 22, 2006 - We are off to Tibet at last! - Day 1

Saturday 22nd. April Day 54 We had been told to be at a hotel in Thamel at 2.40am to get a bus to the Tibetan border so we got up at 2.15, gave Karen a wake up call, then walked up through a deserted Thamel - well not that deserted there were Israelis coming from somewhere, probably a party and various cows in the street munching at rubbish. We arrived at 2.30, waited for our guide who arrived at 3am, and fifteen minutes later two other travelers arrived. We then all walked back through Thamel to another travel agency and waited there an...

Oct 13, 2005 - Tingri - Day 5

Thursday 13th October Had precisely no sleep and the altitude started kicking and making me feel all crap again. I got up to checkout the sunrise but bailed on that as it was too cold, not worth losing a digit or two for. Then Sonar got up and started up the fire, sorted me out a treat the feet and fingers came back to life slowly, but the stomach pains were really beginning to kick in. We jumped on horse cart back down to Rongbuk and caught a bus back down to meet Sani. We travelled 3 hours off road to get to Tingri, I was feeling rough as...

Aug 13, 2005 - Tingri

Really just an overnight stop on the way from Everest to Nepal but a very pleasant valley with a scenic old fort atop a hill which the Chinese have thoughtfully surrounded by concrete and ruined all decent photo-opportunities. Last night of pit toilets and tasteless food before Kathmandu. And now that I have left I can safely say that China makes Nepal (one of the world's poorest countries), look like the height of civilisation. Unfortunately the Tibetans are even less civilised than the Chinese and one of the dirtiest smelliest peoples on...
