i'm writing quick, as Don and I are going to the Chengdu Opera house tonight for a show of music and puppets and who knows what else. ... After a long bus ride yesterday (9 hours?), this bus was not as nice, no air conditioning and the driver seemed to be chain smoking the whole way! Ate a delicious Kong Pow chicken dinner and then boarded the train for Chengdu! We played cards much to the ammusement of the fellow passengers (Belinda is a sharp Bullsh*t player), and then crawled into our bunks for the overnight ride. ... I spent the first couple of days of November travelling as I had to bus for 6 hours from beautiful Xiahe to Lanzhou then I caught a 22 hour train from Lanzhou to Chengdu. ... Saw my first ever foreigners in a hard sleeper last night, an Australian couple, good to talk to. We got in at 6, so after much negotiating with taxi drivers, got to my Guesthouse in the centre of big and modern Chengdu. ... We arrived in Chengdu at 09:00, and was met by the representative from the hostel, who promptly ushered us into taxi's and picked up the fares. ... Whilst argueing with the driver that we had bought a ticket to Chengdu and not the Chengdu ring road, everyone else filed off the bus and jumped on another one which then promptly left. ... We were then stuck in the middle of nowhere, and no sign of a taxi, only some cars which we had to negotiate a lift back to Chengdu!!! The following day we then got up early and went to the panda sanctury where there were about 30 pandas which were being bred in captivity, with the eventually aim of being released back into the wild, but we are not sure how many have actually been released. ...
