I've seen it before. Yes, I'll confess that I too was stricken with this horrible malady in Chengdu. ... Chengdu hangs its hat on the heads of these big furry ambassadors with pandas adorning taxi cabs, coffee mugs, billboards, hotels, garbage cans and every form of tchotchke imaginable. ... It was an easy enough outing as a minivan picked me up at the hostel door and dumped my apathetic ass back in the same place with plenty of time to catch my noontime nap.I've seen it before. Jul 4, 2006 - Opera, Giant Pandas and a Local Specialty
The arduous journey from Yichang to Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan province, took 24 hours. ... After much effort trying to match Chinese characters to words in our guide book we were rescued by another English speaking local, this time with a good heart, who jumped in a taxi with us, got us to the train station and in the correct queue for a ticket on an overnighter to Chengdu - so on we rolled! Boats, buses and trains, we finally arrived at our destination - Chengdu , a city of 4 million plus with air pollution like we have never experienced and the lack lustre character of a construction site. ... We stayed in a hostel situated in a 500 year old Ming era house, within one of the few remaining hutongs filled with locals on outdoor tables playing majong by day and eating from the open air kitchens by night - a fantastic place to enjoy the local culture - Sichuan Hotpot and world cup finals on a plasma screen! So why Chengdu? Its proximity to UN/WWF Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre. ... Situated 10 km from Chengdu, it's a baffling choice of location, given the pollution in the capital and the temperature difference to the panda's natural habitat - maybe the potential tourist dollar was a driving force. ...

Chengdu was the most convenient city for them to organise a flight to Lhasa in Tibet, and was on our route south west to Yunnan, Laos, Thailand and the sun. ...
