Sep 15, 2014 - Day 1 Thursday

Ok, so finally making an entry. Or two. Or three.......Lol. Before even the flight, going through customs was an experience. I took a photo and threatened with $10k fine for taking a photo and deleted in front of security. Innocent mistake so all good. I'm not a terrorist. Lol. Not this photo. In duty free, picked up my 100 proof Southern Comfort bottle for taking over. Cheap and a drink i know i like. Then, there was free taste testings on way to departure lounge. Can i just say that i enjoyed tasting (many times) the $170 bottles of...

Sep 14, 2014 - Eerste week Shanghai

Aug 23, 2014 - Shanghai - Censorville

I might as well have entered china when I boarded the plane. Not a lick of English on any sign/announcement. Only had a Taiwanese guy beside me who told me China East airlines is shameless about being only mandarin. Even with no movie screens the flight was not bad...thank god for Gravol. Had a normal 8 hr sleep and woke up in Shanghai, where the day was ending already. Nothing to do at the terminal. There was no money exchange station open and stores only accepted Chinese currency. So I starved until Singapore. The one weird thing was...

Jul 27, 2014 - Heading home via Shanghai

Up at the crack of dawn. We head to the lobby of the Regent, where there are breakfast boxes for us to take to the airport. We arrive at the Beijing airport in plenty of time. We are joined by another couple who are on our same flights all the way back to JFK. We part ways as we load the plane. Those business seats sure look comfy. It's only an hour and 1/2 flight back to Shanghai. We meet up with the couple from the south and spend our 1 1/2 hour layover chatting about our amazing experience with Viking. They were in a different group, but...

Jul 16, 2014 - Touring Shanghai

Up early a little tired, but ready for the day. After a buffet breakfast in the hotel we met our tour guide, Daniel (his name has to be a good omen, right?) and the other 38 folks in our group. We loaded our comfy bus and headed towards old Shanghai, while Daniel educated us on the history of Shanghai. It is a fairly young city, but they have retained some of their tradition in the Old City (Nanshi). Daniel warned us of the local vendors and the tendency of pick-pocketing that occurs in this area. We made our way to the Ming-dynasty Yu...

Jul 15, 2014 - Back to Shanghai

We started our last day in Hong Kong relaxing and enjoying our view of Victoria Harbor. Today was a travel day. The plan was to leave Hong Kong on a 1:40 flight back to Shanghai to meet up with our Viking Cruise group. Due to high winds and torrential rain in Shanghai, our flight was delayed 5 1/2 hours. Hong Kong airport is a very busy place and finding a seat was difficult, but thank goodness for our business flight status, we were able to pass the delay in the comfort of the business lounge, were food and drink are complementary. We...

Jul 9, 2014 - JFK to Hong Kong

Jennifer got us to JFK in record time. Since we are traveling business, we had a quick and easy check-in and entered the business class lounge to relax for a couple of hours before our 5:00 flight. The lounge is pretty nice, open bar, free food, comfy chairs and peace and quiet. We have a 14hr & 50 min flight ahead of us. We'll be landing in Shanghai at 7:35 AM our time, 7:35 PM Asian time. After an approximate 2 hr layover in Shanghai, we'll leave for Hong Kong, arriving there at 11:35 AM US time, 11:35 PM Hong Kong time. I think we are...

Jun 8, 2014 - Last Glimpse of Shanghai and Homeward Bound

We arose early and were out for a walk before breakfast. Although the air was thick with smog there were numerous groups out doing their morning exercise. Before heading to the airport we walked along the Bund along the riverside and then crossed under the river to visit the famous financial district of Shanghai. We went to the observation deck on the 88th floor of the Fin Mau Tower and gazed across at the 4th highest building in the world which is still under construction. Phyllis, who is not particularly comfortable with heights, stayed...

Jun 7, 2014 - Shanghai with 24 Million Others

We spent the night in the Astor Hotel, built in the 1800s and the oldest western style hotel in Shanghai. We stayed in a room just down from one used by Ulysses S. Grant and one floor up from the room used by Charlie Chaplin. The mix of teak and mahogany takes one back to the hotel's previous years of glory. We then spent the morning at the Shanghai Museum exploring the four floors of artifacts numbering around 120,000. We were then off to the Yu Garden, a very peaceful retreat in the middle of a very bustling city. After a little shopping...

Jun 6, 2014 - More of Xian and on to Shanghai!

This was a relatively quiet day as we shifted gears preparing for the last leg of our trip to the largest city in China, Shanghai. We began our morning with a short visit to the Muslim district of Xian. We strolled the tranquil grounds of the Great Mosque and had a walk down the shopping street surrounding the area. This brought back memories of the souk in Damascus and tempted the desire to do some haggling over clearly marked-up items. Bob purchased a $10 Rolex watch which told accurate time up until we reached the end of the street. Some...
