After breakfast, we headed out for our 5 hour walk at 9am, through the rice terraces. The terraces were first cultivated in the 13th century Yuan dynasty and has changed over the hundreds of years. The Zhuang and Yao people who are living here, from generation to generation, build banks and open fields and plant rice for food. From ravines with streams to peaks wreathing with fog, every part of the mountain that can be farmed has become terraces. For several hundred years, each generation has made the Longji Terraces more and more perfect....

Jun 19, 2008 - Chaolong to Longji

Today we are heading for the Longji Rice Terraces which is located at high mountain ridges. The highest terrace spot is 1200 feet, and we will be walking for 5 hours through these marvellous terraces tomorrow. We couldn't take our large backpacks with us to Longji as we will be staying in two different hostels and walking between them, so we needed to pack enough for 2 nights and 3 days into our small day-packs, which isn't terribly easy, but something that we managed to do.
