Oct 20, 2005 - bus hell. On the road to Yangshuo.

From Guangzhou we got a bus/coach to Yangshuo. Horrible horrible 10 hour journey with a suicidal driver (worse than the one in Morocco!!remember Sarah and Anna)he obviously liked to play chicken with EVERYONE possible - vehicle/person/stray animal on the road. At the beginning of the journey they gave us small plastic bags. I should have realised then. But in my naivety I thought this was for rubbish. However when the guy behind and the guy to the right started to throw up in them I realised my mistake. I did not think it possible for a...

China trip 2005

Oct 10, 2005 - Yangshou

No problem !

AJUUS !!!!!!!

Sep 26, 2005 - Yangshuo

Yangshuo is our first stop on our tour that goes from Hong Kong to Beijing and lasts for 22 days. We took an overnight train from Hong Kong to get here...a "hard sleeper" with about 70 bunks in each cart...with no doors, just an open room with beds. The bunks are three beds high..and Ray and I got the very top beds! It was quite interesting, but surprisingly, not too uncomfortable. The air conditioning was always on, so it stayed cool. And there is always a kettle with boiling water next to the beds, so we had noodles for dinner...not...

Apr 13, 2005 - M, J: Attacked by a chicken in Yangshuo

China is a wonderful country! After my last entry where I was grateful I had survived the Beijing experience, this opening might surprise you. We are now in the heart of China's South East, and the grim, dusty landscape of the North has been replaced with verdant mountains, rice paddies, Water Buffalo, and yes, kamikaze chicken. After biking through the countryside, we stopped at a local café to cool off. I ordered mango juice. "No mo' mango" came the answer. "Okay, I'll have an orange juice". After a minute, the lady comes back and places...

Skipping Stones

Apr 10, 2005 - Yangshuo

Got up at 7am...a killer!! We got the bus to Yangshuo from Guangzhou bus station where we also met an Israeli couple headed the same way. The journey was an arduous, bump nine hours. Our driver was crazy, going at stupidly high speeds and beeping his horn at every vehicle/bicycle/person that got in his way. The funny things was that he didn't have the slightest inclination to slow down if the vehicle in front wasn't moving. It was really scary as we were sat at the front! A woman started puking all throughout the last 3 hours of the...

Aug 2, 2004 - Yangshou

Well, the train wasn't too bad - managed to sleep for a good part of the 10 hour trip, with a 6:30 arrival in Guilin. It would have been nice to do it in daylight, although I still saw some beautiful moonlit scenery in the dark as we crossed rice paddies and farmland. Met up with another group as we left the train - Olli (a German from England), and Kiae and Chang Yi from Korea. We got the bus straight down to Yangshou, a smaller and cheaper town about an hour & a half south of Guilin. Yangshou is a lovely little town next to the Li river,...
