Aug 9, 2009 - Shamien Island=SHOPPING

Last night we had a GREAT dinner! We were going to go to Pizza Hut, but several families were venturing out to an Italian Restaurant about 6 blocks from our hotel. We tagged along with them and had a great dinner! I had spiral pasta, sun dried tomatoes, feta cheese and scallions, all tossed in olive oil. Dave had a gigantic ham and cheese calzone. Matt had a huge plate of fried rice with pork and vegetables. We couldn't believe how much he ate! This morning we went to Shamien Island to go shopping. We bought several outfits, some Western...

Journey to Matthew!

Aug 8, 2009 - Medical Exam

We flew out of Changsha yesterday. Amy drove us to the airport at 4:00pm. We waited in the airport until our plane took off at 8:05pm. Matthew was so tired. He DID NOT want to sit in his own seat - he is glued to my arms - and he started screaming and carrying on. I asked the flight attendant if I was allowed to hold him during take off - she said there was no problem with that. As soon as I picked him up, he stopped his crying. He fell asleep once we were in the air. He woke up as we landed. He was very good the entire flight. We got to...

Return to China 2009

Apr 18, 2009 - Guangzhou & The White Swan

We return to the amazing White Swan Hotel in Guangzhou in the pouring rain. Thank goodness Guangzhou has a new airport - it is beautiful and nothing like the hanger we landed in in 1997 and 1998! We are scheduled to go on a dinner/river cruise which will take us along the Pearl River. Our guide Elvin will stay with us through our visit to Wuzhou and back. His English is excellent and he is full of information about the city and China. We locate the Red Sofas where we took the tradtional baby photos after each adoption. We would line up all...

Apr 15, 2009 - Success at the fabric market.

Got up this morning, not feeling 100%, but guessing that it will pass, as I wake up. I did consider not going to Guangzhou, and putting it off until next week, but gave myself a mental push, and off I went. I told Blue Sky I would be waiting at the bus station at midday, so I got there a little early, with enough time to buy some cans of drink, and some snacks to eat on the way. When he arrived, we got bus tickets, for a 12.20 bus, which was pretty good. We did not have long to wait, and off we went. Mr Fish had said that he would meet us,...

Apr 3, 2009 - To Guangzhou and the fabric market.

Well, I got up at 7am, and got myself packed, and showered, and ready to go to catch the bus. I left here at 8.30, feeling sure that would leave enough time to get to the bus station. I was planning to take a taxi, but there was a #12 bus as I got near the bus stop. That one stops right outside the bus station, so I got on that instead. When I got to the bus station, I had time to buy some nibbles and a drink, before going to wait for the time to get on the bus. We had an uneventful run through to Guangzhou, and I slept for some of the way....

Jan 22, 2009 - Blue Sky and I went to collect Sheila at Guangzhou airport.

The alarm rang at 7.30, and I struggled to wake up. I had staggered out to make a coffee, and had begun to come to life, when I received a message from Sheila. Her plane was late into Singapore, so she missed the connecting flight, and would now be arriving around 5pm, via Hong Kong. First thing I did was to call Cheer and ask him to phone and check that my 9.30 ticket could be used at 2.30. He got back to me quickly, with an affirmative answer, so I had a coffee and went back to my bed, and managed to sleep until 11am, when I received a...

Oct 10, 2008 - To Guangzhou for Vicki's speaking competition.

This morning, I had the early class, with the small group of '07 students, who came to my place, and we talked about the topics they have so far covered; the heart, sleeplessness, anaesthesia, allergic reactions, and medical emergencies. They all seem to know their subjects well, although some are more able to discuss them than others are. I once again played the part of a distressed, or puzzled patient, and they had to diagnose my problems, and make suggestions for the management of my distress!! After the class, I went back to bed, as I...

Jul 5, 2008 - Guangzhou

In the morning we were to catch a train for a 2 hour journey to Guangzhou, our frist destination in mainland China. When we got there we immediately decided to buy our train tickets to Guilin for two days time. Now I don't know if it was totally the wrong thing to do but we let a chinese guy (who spoke no English) to buy our tickets, cut the massive queue, and pocket our change from the tickets. It wasn't like there was a foreigners counter or any english writing. Anyway we made it to the YHA and felt so much better when we had a great...

Made In China?

Jun 8, 2008 - Episode 2: Lost in translation

DAy 4: Travellled to Guangzhou. A journey that we were informed would take 1 and a half hours, it took 5!! and that was how we proceeded. A nightmare journey whereby nobody understood a word we were saying, we eventually got to the craziest city ever, which seemed somewhat filled with flyovers and identical buildings. It rained so hard we were starting to dislike china, but found a haven in an area called the shamian island. A small colonial esque part of the city that had retained some history. Found a nice hostel for half the price we...

May 16, 2008 - Leaving Guangzhou. Sad day, but relieving at the same time.

I had arranged to meet Rony at 9am at the hotel, to go to get a bus to Guangzhou. I had my luggage down in the foyer, and was checked out by then. We got a taxi, and met Xiao Hong at the bus station. She had come to see me off. What a sweet girl. She collects the ownership papers for their house today. Rony and I left on the 9.20am but, so we got to Guangzhou with plenty of time to spare. So we walked across the front of the main railway station, and went into KFC for a coffee and some food, before going around the corner to the Airport...

Apr 21, 2008 - Trip to the airport, to see Cheryl off.

An early start to the day today. And I woke to hear the sound of steady, quite heavy rain, which looked like it was here for a good long time!! Half-jokingly, I sent up a silent prayer for the weather to clear, not really feeling that this is exactly an appropriate thing to pray for, but lo and behold, by the time we were ready to leave, the rain had stopped!! Cheryl had been up earlier than me, and had been down to meet with Mandy, and say her good-byes, and also came back with gifts from her, to take home. The students are all so very...
