Dec 20, 2009 - Mallory is Leaving!!

In 3 days I must say "good-bye" to one of the coolest people I have ever met. Her name is Mallory Vogel, and she is one of those people that really strikes you the first time you meet them. I remember the moment I met her thinking ~ Wow, she's cool. I want to be friends with her. ~ And we became friends!!!! YAY!!!!! Ahhh so many good times we have had...brain overload...so many... First and foremost: "Real World-Zhuhai" -If you are unaware what "Real World" is go and ask someone under the age of 25. Mal and I, to ease the stress of being...

Dec 19, 2009 - Canton (Guangzhou) China

We left our hotel room in Wan Chai, HK and walked to the Star ferry terminal to cross to Kowloon, then to the train station in Hung Hom. Customs clearance was uninteresting, but the train ride was, pretty much densely populated the whole 3 hour ride and a mix of poverty and brand new development. Got to the station and were almost Shanghai'd so to speak. A man tried to take our bags and drive us to our destination claiming he was a taxi. He had Nickies bag in the trunk by the time it struck me he had no meter and no taxi sign. I had to...

Dec 19, 2009 - Guangzhou

Sunday. What a long, long day Friday was! After some further document action, we were off to the airport around 3:00 pm, but it was 1:00 in the morning before we finally checked in to our hotel in Guangzhou (Canton). We were shocked at how well all the little ones held up. And later in the morning, John and I were shocked by the beautiful sight outside the restaurant windows. The White Swan hotel is right on the banks of the Pearl River and the views are outstanding. After breakfast, Lori and Chad were busy again with document processing,...

Dec 17, 2009 - Happy Birthday Dereck!

Hey all, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY DERECK! I am a horrible sister. I didn't call my brother on his birthday. SORRY! SORRY! SORRY! So, having Dereck as my brother is awesome. Especially in China. Many people are really interested in my siblings. (That's what happens when you have a one child policy in your country, I guess.)So, I always tell them about my brothers and when they come in my dorm I have some pictures up that they always look at. The picture that we took at the cabin this summer always puzzles them...why do you all look like...

Dec 14, 2009 - Dinner with Long Ge

Hey! Ok....I am about 3 blogs behind. I thoroughly apologize. Please keep reading. You are all my only link to the outside world. My life is slowly being consumed by China...ahhhhh! Send me some American candy for Christmas. Like...Reeses peanut butter cups. yum. If you all each sent me one candy bar that would be great. Hehe. :) Just not snickers, cause they have those here already. Or send a chocolate orange that you can only get at Christmas. And I will send you back some tea and rice...the staple foods of my diet here. Alright, I'm...

Dec 8, 2009 - Hiking continued...

So last time I left off with my packing list for the hiking trip...so now to continue this story... So once I had all of my equipment, we had a team meeting and gear check the night before we left. Long Ge,(maybe I mentioned him before) the owner of the bakery on campus and Bruce's friend came and gave us a talk on safety and preparedness and the route we were to take. He's a really cool guy. This was all in Chinese because very very unfortunately (more about this later too) Long Ge doesn't speak any English, besides bakery words he knows,...

Dec 4, 2009 - President's visit!

Hey All, Thank you so much for keeping up with me. Once again, as always, I'm terribly sorry for my randomness in my messages. To tell the truth, November, even in the tropics of China, has always been a tough month for me and so I haven't felt much like writing lately...it just makes me realize how much I miss my mommy. (Mom, I miss you.) But many awesome things have happened once again and I have been really really busy as always. First though, THANK YOU RUTH!!! Ruthie sent me some kids books and some candy! :) The candy was eaten by...

Sep 21, 2009 - Day 2: Hong Kong - Guangzhou

This was a day of travelling... punctuated only with brief, but almost unbearable periods outside in the heat and humidity, where we just hurried to the next mode of transport. First up was a fairly ordinary taxi ride, except for witnessing one of those overloaded bicycles crashing into the back of another taxi. The bicycle rider seemed to have hurt his stomach and the taxi driver was not impressed by his broken indicator light, but neither of them seemed concerned that the bicycle goods were now strewn all over two lanes of the road (mind...

Aug 13, 2009 - We're home!!!!

We woke up at 5am and checked out of the hotel. We took a ride to the airport with our travel guides. They escorted us to where we would wait for our flight. The first flight was uneventful - Matthew just didn't like the window shade open. When we got to Shang Hai, we had to wait for 5 hours until our 12 1/2 hour flight to Newark. Matthew was really warming up to Dave, the airport even had a mini playground area, but Matt preferred to run around the waiting room and have us chase him. We boarded the flight and when we took off, matthew fell...

Journey to Matthew!

Aug 12, 2009 - US Consulate Appt.

Today Matthew was feeling much better! He's back to his usual self - pushing Dave away, wanting to be my third arm, etc! We woke up early, then had breakfast, went back to the room. It was rainy this morning. We decided to take a taxi back to Shamien Island for some more sight seeing, as we didn't have to meet up with the group until 3:00pm. The taxi there cost us $50 chinese money, going back it cost us $25 chinese money - do you think we got "suckered" the 1st time around???? Anyway, we bought some great gifts for family members there....

Journey to Matthew!

Aug 10, 2009 - Medical Clearance

Today was a bit better between Matthew and David. It started with when I went into the shower. Instead of his usual wailing, Matthew just whined until I came out. We decided to go swimming in our hotel pool. We had to purchase bathing caps, which Dave was NOT happy about, but it was ok. Matthew really liked the water today! He was splashing and putting his face in! He was splashing Dave and the other people in the pool. We stayed in for about an hour. The pictures look blue becasue the room was tinted blue. Afterwards, we had a bit of lunch...

Journey to Matthew!

Aug 10, 2009 - Sick Day

Today was a wash...Matthew had a reaction to all the shots yesterday, so we did nothing but stay in the room. He had a fever of 101. I didn't bring children's tylenol (but this trip I DID bring orajel - go figure!) Anyway, someone from our group let me use theirs, and it put Matt to sleep. He took three naps today. He didn't want to walk, eat, drink. We watched a lot of movies on HBO today. Dave is getting stir crazy! Anyway, about 5:00pm, he started to become Matthew again. He was laughing and playing, but we are still taking it easy with...
