May 17, 2013 - Off and running

We've recovered from our misadventure in Causeway Bay and have bought tickets for the first leg of our journey, Hung Hom to Guangzhou East. We had originally intended going straight through to Yueyang but have decided to stop in Guangzhou for a few days. K's sister, who lives in Guangzhou, was planning to meet up with us in HK but got detained (!) in China and was unable to travel to HK. Luckily we are flexible enough in our travel arrangements to be able to change our schedule less than a week in to our trip! We could never have foreseen...

Feb 26, 2013 - Huang Pu, China (Guangzhou)

We spent the day in China's third largest city, Guangzhou. It was an amazing contrast of "old China" traditions with old temples/pagodas and open local markets and the "new China" with towering Skyscrapers most dissapearing into the fog/smog at the top. It is simply amazing how they fit so many people in such tight quarters. The government apartmant buildings are subsidized and the average square footage is about 600 sq feet with hundreds of units per in these amazing high rise buildings! Cheryl suffered through another family style asian...

Jan 24, 2013 - Clumsy back in China

Hi Kadence and Classmates, After several days visiting Cambodia, we flew back to Guangzhou, China to join family. One day we visited the Safari Park in Guangzhou. We had a great day. Here is a picture of me with Asian black bears in the background. They look different than our Canadian bears. Clumsy Hi Grade 3 Class, Can you see the white tigers in the background? They are very rare in the world. At the Safari Park you can feed a baby white tiger. Clumsy The elephants look sad and I am sad too because I have to leave China tomorrow and...

Nov 1, 2012 - Clumsy's First Halloween

Hi Kadence and Friends, I am still in Guangzhou, China and I have just celebrated my first Halloween. I had a lot of fun tonight!! My travel friends and their family all got dressed in costumes. My travel friends and I went out "trick or treating" and I got a lot of candy. After that, we all went to the park in the community for a bar-b-que (hamburgers and hotdogs--just like in Canada). By nine o'clock we went home and I dumped out all my candy to see what I got. WOW!! I hope you have as much fun tonight on Halloween as I did! I love...

Aug 3, 2012 - Last Day

We're in Guangzhou today at the China Hotel. A bunch of us were driven to the China Hotel while others went to Hong Kong and elsewhere. Renn and I hung out with Crystal and Sydney this afternoon. We took a cab to Shamian Island even though some people told us most of the shops are closed. It wasn't exactly true. There are still several shops and we were able to find a lot of bargains. They need customers while the White Swan is under construction. Tomorrow we head home. We have had the best time, and I am so glad we made the trip.

Jul 29, 2012 - Guangzhou - Seeing Old Friends

We had another chill day so that we could rest up for the Yangchun reunion part of the trip. We had breakfast with another Yangchun family who have three girls. Their oldest, a 15-year old, is from Yangchun. We walked around a bit and shopped a bit, but mostly, it was a chill day. Just as we were heading for the pool, it started raining. In the late afternoon, we got a call from our adoption trip travel mates, the Guerney/Duhamel Family. Renn has been looking forward to seeing Zoe. Just had a nice dinner with them and caught up on their...

Jul 28, 2012 - Happy Family Day, Renn

Happy Adoption Day, Renn. Today is Renn's family day. The 10th anniversary of the day we met her. It seems auspicious that we are in Guangzhou 10 years to the day we met her. We left the New Century Hotel in Beijing at the horrible hour of 5 am to catch an 8:40 flight to Guangzhou. By the time it was all said and done, it was 2:15 before we walked into our hotel room. We were both tired. I have full blown cold. We are staying at the China Hotel which is really fancy. It seems to be the new home of adoptive parents. We have seen several...

Jun 22, 2012 - Canton Tower

A quick update with a photo of Canton Tower. This tower is huge at over 600 m high. Fortunately the ticket price to go up was enough to convince my fear of heights it was not worth the trip up. Also it was cloudy. Honest. Anyway tomorrow I fly to Ashgabat to start the tour. Another long travel day with a 6hr airport layover. Oh the food here is delicious, I apparently amazed the restaurant tonight because I used chopsticks.

Jun 21, 2012 - It's pronounced Guang-Jo

Firstly, lets settle the age old debate on pronouncing the city of Guangzhou's name. Its Guang-jo, not Guang-jow or guang-show. OK not that's settled, lets move on shall we :-) I will let you call it Canton, the locals still call it that sometimes. China Southerns premium economy, isn't that premium, but neither was the price. I did get leg room though, so I was happy. The food was standard and I survived the 9 1/2 hour flight. Guangzhou was never on the silk road, but it did effectively kill off the silk road, by becoming the port for...

Nov 10, 2011 - Guangzhou

Mid flight stop between Ganzhou and Guilin. The VIP lounge in Ganzhou only had 10 seats and one particularly annoying traveller with an annoying hawk (even for China) and a very loud voice. Straight up and down 50 minute flight into Guangzhou and a quest to find the right lounge but we have now found the wine and free internet for a 4 hour wait between flights.

Nov 5, 2011 - Leaving Zhaoqing in the school bus, with Frankle and Andy.

Andy was at my house bright and early this morning. He and I both felt a little sad on this my last morning in China, for now. He helped me downstairs with my luggage, and we walked around to where Frankle was waiting for me, with the school mini-bus. It is so very kind of them to supply transport for me, it makes it so, so much easier even than the airport express bus. Frankle had another phone cover for me, and a wallet, made by Dandan for me, since our dinner on Wednesday night. I do not know where she found the time, as she has work and...

Oct 25, 2011 - Off to Guangzhou with Winnie, to get some shopping, and have some time out.

Winnie and I had arranged to go to Guangzhou today, to get some shopping, and to just hang out for a while. It is a long time since we have done that. And to make it better, Andy is in Guangzhou at the moment, with Angie, his client from Columbia. We got the bus to GZ, which was uneventful, and then took a taxi to the Baigong Hotel. This was a good starting point for us, as I did not know the name of the street I had to go to, but I knew how to get there from the Baigong. We wandered along, past many electronic markets, and went into one,...
