The scenery was spectacular. I've never see such rows of huge snow capped mountains with lush green ranching valleys below and winding rivers and glaciers. Not even in the Rockies. I stopped several times and admired the scenery and took some short walks. It was a relatively quick drive. I reached the hostel i had a reservation at and must say it's the biggest disappointment thus far, but hey, I'm in Patagonia and these are far from luxury accommodations. But I had food I needed a fridge for some meat I had purchased and there is no fridge...

I drove back to cerro castillo and went to the horseback riding place and they said they had a group at 4 so I decided to get some lunch and join the group. Well the group was supposed to be two people driving from Balmeceda but they didn't show up. However, a man and woman from Holland showed up and I convinced them to go riding so we set out with our guide Pancho (perfect name). Pancho doesn't speak much English so I translated for the Dutch. One of the border collies from the ranch snuck out and followed us chasing rabbits and going in...

Jan 12, 2006 - Trekking zum Cerro Castillo

Als ich dienstagmorgens den Kleinbus von "Interlagos" (Route Coyhaique-Cochrane) nach Villa Cerro Castillo bestieg war dar Himmel zwar ziemlich bewölkt, aber zu regnen begonnen hatte es nicht wieder. Während der Fahrt drang sogar die Sonne durch Wolken und so erschien die Landschaft nicht wie bis anhin eher düster, sondern hell und freundlich. Eindreiviertel Stunden später (um etwa viertel nach elf) im 300 Seelendorf unterhalb des Namengebenden Cerro Castillo angekommen half mir die Besitzerin eines an der Carratera Austral gelegenen...
