left Arica on the 10:30 bus, 4 hours later, driving through the desert, I arrived in Iquique that sits on a narrow terrace at the foot of the coastal range, which abruptly rises 600m above the city. Blocked by the mountains, it has sprawled north and, especially, south along the coast. Iquique's 19th-century mining boom is still evident in its preserved Georgian mansions, the Victorian clock tower on Plaza Prat.
