Jul 22, 2014 - La Paz, Bolivia to Iquique, Chile

Friday 18th July 2014 La Paz, Bolivia to Iquique, Chile Up early to repack and weigh all of our luggage for the flight firstly down to Iquique in Chile then home next week. We are both choked up with colds and coughs and feel horrible. The altitude here in La Paz doesn't help either. Lots of people seem to be sick by the coughing and spluttering that you hear. We went down to breakfast and saw the awful news about the Malaysian Airlines plane being shot down by Russian separatists. We then packed up and went out to spend our last bit of...

Jun 10, 2013 - playa-n about in iquique

So we arrived here late on on the 8th....didn't like first hotel so as explained with the help of Chilean polis we got sorted with somewhere heaps better. Iquique is a strange mix, part easterhouse part Brighton. And Chilean Spanish is impossible to follow, although I didn't feel quite as bad about that when Peruvians told me they found it really hard to understand too. The beaches wed longed for are a bit of a dispointment...although again, I've been on the best beaches in the world (Scotland, Bahamas, nz and some of the Aussie ones - NOT...

Jun 9, 2013 - pisco'd up in chile

Were wasted on pisco sours for me and a well dodgy mojito plus some beers for Lou and after possibly the worst teriyaki chicken I ever had but the guys running the place are gay and are playin the best music ever we are officially wankered woohoo! Una yapa por favor! PS today we were fucked with no money and the stupid cash machine wouldnt work so I totally smiled at and flirted with a polis til they gave us a lift to a decent hostel.... Chilean polis rule! Wed have been shafted without them, wish I'd got a pic!

Jul 22, 2010 - Iquique

Even here, at Iquique which is a big port town, we see many casinos. Haven't commented on this but it seems from MX, El Salvador, Panama, Equidor, Peru, and now Chile this is quite big business. Also, now in bus terminals, we are having to pay a bus terminal tax of all things. Usually only 25Ç US or so but mainly just a hassle. Cloudy day, we catch the 10:30 am bus - Chile is noticeably diff from Peru in that bldgs are more apt to be painted (Peru they just leave bricks/concrete block gray, drab - if they paint at all just the front)....

Aug 28, 2009 - on the road home Iquique Northern Chile

I took a flight from La Paz to Iquique. It was a stop over for a couple of hours. I saw the desert in Northern Chile that lies on the coast line from the airport which is in the desert, then on to Santiago for my flight back home. It is so sad to leave so much more I wanted to see.

Nov 4, 2008 - Parque Pan de Azucar (Sweet Bread Park)

We´ve spent a full day in this beautiful park. The reason for stopping was to see penguins. We had heard this park had lots. Well, the first day (Sat. 11/1) we spent about 1/2 the day driving through the park. No penguins, but we did see some spectacular views of the sea from very high cliffs. We also saw a fox. He was eating something inside a cactus. He was fantastic, but no penguins. We returned to our hotel, mentioned the fact that there were no penguins sited. The gal at the hotel said, did you go to the island? Well, why didn´t you...

Sep 19, 2008 - Iquique

Sep 14, 2007 - Iquique - Chile

When in Iquique here in Northern Chile, I decided to hire a rental car. It cost me around $50 USD plus petrol. It was a small Chevrolet and I had already been to the Iquique Tourist Information to get a map of the area, along with information about places I could possibly visit on my little 24 hrs road trip to the interior. The person at the office told me about the ghost town of Humberstone, El Gigante del Atacama and Pintados, the two last being prehistoric paitings in the hills of the Atacama desert, drawn up around the years 500-1000 by...

Exotic South America

Jun 16, 2007 - Iquique

Friday 15 June Got some sleep and then headed into town. It was then that I remembered what I had so disliked about Chile the first time. I walked along the beach (the Lonely Planet says they were working on making this a beach resort - well judging by the cement mixers they're still working on it) and was whistled at, hissed at, muttered at, stared at...and so in typical woman style I headed in a department store and went shopping! It's the first place I have found a big store since Brazil where I can shop without constantly being asked if...

Sep 3, 2006 - Leaving Peru

Well it had to happen at some point - I had to leave Peru and head down to Chile for my last few days in South America (which seem to have come around really fast). Up at the crack of dawn, to catch a bus at 7.30, I was exhausted to start the day. After some confusion over where my bus was going from and then being told I wasn't allowed to catch the bus because I hadn't paid my bus station tax I finally got on, and the bus left. About an hour late. Apart from having our hand luggage searched for fruit or vegetables, and having my 3 oranges...

Geraint's World Trip

Jun 20, 2006 - Iquique, Chile

Deutsch Castellano After a long bus drive, various drug checks and hours of waiting on the Chilean border we finally arrived in Iquique, apparently Chile's best beach resort, on midday. The city doesn't seem to be very excting on first sight - blocks and blocks and hardly any beach to see. But it also has cude little streets and coffee shops to offer, salt statues and beautiful squares. We even found a beach in the end and the Pazific ocean looked fab, reflecting the sun in the afternoon. Nevertheless, Iquique isn't as exciting as we...
