Feb 12, 2009 - Chiloe Island up to Valdivia.

I decided that i wanted to slow down a bit, and after finding all the hostels booked out, i went to the most residencial, non-touristy street i could find and ask people walking along whether they knew of some casa de familia that i could stay at for a week or so, to live with the family and practice some spanish.Isla de Chiloe hangs off one of the more important southern port cities, Puerto montt. Sunday 25th February 2007 My Saturday night in Castro was fun and a Chileno musical experience! I met Jacqueline & Conor (who are also staying at the hostel) for dinner and some wine, and then we strolled up to the gym hall for the Schwenke & Nilo concert, which Conor had seen posters for in town.com - NB the photo on the homepage is a little too kind as they have aged considerably since that was taken! I arrived in Valdivia this afternoon after a very short and pleasant 7 hour bus journey! Was immediately struck by the size of this city, as it is the largest and busiest place I have been to for just over a month! Valdivia was founded in 1552 by Pedro de Valdivia and was one of the most important centres of Spanish control over Chile. ... During the Wars of Independence in 1820, Valdivia was seized by Chile and remained an outpost of Chilean rule until the 1880's. ... There was also much German colonisation during this time and there remains a strong German presence and influence today.Sunday 25th February 2007 My Saturday night in Castro was fun and a Chileno musical experience! The plan - to be in a town during a festival, actuallity - we were one week early despite what our guide book said Even without the river carnival Valdivia is a colourful coastal town with a few little nooks and crannies to explore and, when Pop's chest was well enough, this is what we did. ... Valdivia is a funky little riverside University town and between battles for the purse, we managed to check out a few sights including the riverside seafood market where enormous sea lions come up on the pier to beg for handouts from the fishmongers. ...
