After the Mapuche uprising in 1598 the remaining Spanish fled to the island of Chiloé and were effectively cut off from the north for two hundred years. Once a year a ship would sail with supplies from Lima. That is may be not as bad as it sounds, since from Spain only two fleets per year sailed to South America.
