Mar 8, 2013 - Puerto Montt, Chile
March 6, 2013 At sea Sailing within sight of the Andes, I was awakened about 5:30 am to the rock and roll of the ship. They must sail faster at night as you don’t feel much movement during the day. Standing out on the balcony, I could see the ship’s lights reflecting off the ship’s wake and nearby white-caps. We slept in to about 11, had lunch. At 1:30 we bundled up with jackets and blankets (it is cold) and sat on wet chaise lounges at the outdoor pool to watch the ice carving demonstration. At 4 pm the ship sailed into a narrow fiord to...

Feb 16, 2013 - Days at Sea & Puerto Montt Chile
This morning we arrive in Puerto Montt Chile, the capital of tourism. We have to tender into the port so you do the usual hurry up and wait until it is your turn. The seas are okay but it is cold, windy and rainy. Today we have booked a private van for the group with a guy named Gale who is originally from Oregon. He greets us at the port with great enthusiasm and introduces our guide, Francesca, who is a 23 school teacher who does guiding in the summer. She is a lovely girl but her voice is a little quiet. This whole area has a German...

Ship tender dropped us at the Puerto Montt dock and we had a look around around the main town. Not much to see and it was raining and places were shutting down in the afternoon due to Christmas eve. We had to content with passengers from two other cruse ships, so it seemed like there was an invasion in the main port. We didn't book a tour and from what we heard the rain made it difficult to see the sights. We bought a couple a Alpaca garments to keep warm and will come in handy later in the trip. Back to the vessel and the Christmas theme...

Feb 18, 2011 - Puerto Montt, Chile
Puerto Montt is known for its powerful natural beauty. It marks the Northern Patagonia area of Chile. This area is comprised of the towering Andes Mountains, glacially carved lakes, snow-capped volcanoes, and many flowing, glacially fed rivers. The beauty of Puerto Montt, Osorno Volcano, and the Petrohue Rapids was an unforgettable memory.

Feb 16, 2011 - Puerto Montt
Wednesday, February 16, 2010 When you’re dealing with such a rugged coast line, nothing is certain. All excursions for today have been delayed, and I hope, not cancelled. The port of Puerto Montt is closed due to high winds. The port is open only when winds are less than 20 knots, and I think I heard it currently is 22, gusting to 40 knots. Everyone is waiting for further notice as to when any excursions will be going out. A tender made a trial run to see if we could be tendered, since the boat cannot dock. We got the “all clear” to start...

Feb 22, 2010 - Ferried Away
After my one glorious night in Puerto Montt (made glorious by the soft bed, warm comforter, hot shower with borrowed towel, and lack of exposure to wind/rain/noisy dogs), I headed down to the terminal run by the Navimag company, an outfit with several cargo ferries of varying sizes that have been outfitted to carry passengers along the coast between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales, as well as shorter excursions into the glacier-rimmed Laguna San Rafael. After scrutinizing the somewhat battered ticket I'd bought and printed out about a month...

WOW! What a difference a day at sea can make. We arrived at Puerto Montt at sunrise and could clearly see two magnificent snow-covered volcanoes. These volcanoes are rarely seen because of the low hanging cloud cover. The view was breathtaking. Today we moved from the climate of the Central Valley to the climate of the Pacific Northwest. We spent the day in Puerto Montt and took a side trip to Puerto Varas and Petrohue Falls. There is quit a large German population in this area of Chile. German schools, restaurants, and shops are...

Oct 30, 2009 - Puerto Montt
We arrived in Puerto Montt early evening and although the weather had been good on the journey down from Pucon it was absolutely pouring with rain when we got there. We went and got some dinner and hoped that it would clear up over the next couple of days because the reason we had come to Puerto Montt was to get the ferry through the Patagonian channels to Puerto Natales in Southern Patagonia. Unfortunately, to add to our worries, that first night I came down with food poisoning (I think from the dinner I'd had the night before) and was...
