We boarded the bus to San Pedro de Atacama which was a 24-hour bus drive. We will spare you the gory details of such a trip but suffice to say it was like being on a plane to Australia without the jetlag. We decided to pay extra in order to get a seat that would fold down to a complete bed. This proved to be an absolute godsend and we were very happy after 24 hours of travelling to still be able to function at 2500 metres altitude when we arrived at San Pedro de Atacama. Apr 23, 2008 - San Pedro de Atacama (Chile)

Another truly beautiful area. We arrived here yesterday after a 10-hr bus ride with no vegetarian food unfortunately! Luckily we stopped at the border where I managed to get a cheese empanada (the local food....kind of similar to a pasty). The town is so tiny, you can walk across in 10 minutes or less from one dusty track to the other side. No cars, or very few, lots of backpackers and people selling tours, all buildings on one level! Today we had to get up at 4am to see a tour of the geysers at sunrise, was AMAZING! but freezing cold,...
