Jun 8, 2007 - Chile - Pucon

After wishing the giant farewell we arrived in Santiago at 8.30am and quickly set about getting our ticket for the onward journey to Pucon at 8.45am. The next 11 hours would be spent with just ourselves and the ipod to keep us company. The journey itself was actually quite pleasant taking in the countryside as we headed south. It seems that the area around Santiago is for the wine industry so it wouldnt be long before we tried a bottle or two. We arrived into Pucon at 8pm and found a great hostel to stay in. In fact it is a home of a...

Jun 5, 2007 - Pucon

Sooooooooooooooooooo, We arrived in Pucon after one of the coldest bus journeys know to man. The 6am bus trip through 2 immigration points with NO heating on board was just ridiculous. I went to get a thermometer out to check how cold it was - however unfortunately the mercury had frozen... We arrived, and within a few hours i had my first case of travellers gut and CBATDA (can't be assed to do anything). First two days were spent heavily investing in the hostels cable TV! in front of the two wooden fireplaces. The feeling better, talked...

Mar 7, 2007 - Chile, Pucon - 6 - 8 March

So back into Chile, this time heading for Pucon, a small touristy town in the Chilean Lake District near the border with Argentina catering to winter sports and climbing, specifically the ascent of Volcan Villarrica. The bus trip and early morning border crossing marked another hit on our list of spectacular journeys with Volcan Lanin looming 3776 metres above sea level and dominating the landscape for most of our journey. The snow capped peak was most vividly seen from the Chilean border post - another good view, another slow border...

Mar 1, 2007 - Temuco & Cunco, Chile

Thursday 1st March 2007 Well, my suspicions were correct, the German/Mapuche owned farm I am staying on really is in the middle of nowhere! The owners Adela and Helmut live on a farm which is situated around 20 kms from the next town which is Cunco. These were my instructions/directions for how to get there:- 1. From the regional bus station, take mini bus 2 or 7 to Temuco town centre 2. Walk from there to the Nar-bus terminal on Balmaceda 3. Take the bus towards Cunco for Huichahue, Melipeuco or Icalma * 4. Get off at Faja 16000 (a faja as...

Feb 27, 2007 - Pucon, Chile

Wednesday 28th February 2007 I arrived in Pucon yesterday. Pucon is a small town situated on the south eastern shore of Lake Villarica, with a superb view of the Villarica volcano (at 2840m high), and the surrounding mountains. It is close to a number of thermal springs and is also a very touristy town and popular spot for lots of activities such as rafting, volcanoe climbing, trekking, horse riding, etc. etc. However, I opted for a far more relaxing passtime, and spent the entire afternoon at some thermal geometric springs, wallowing in...

Feb 20, 2007 - PUCON, Chile

The adventure sports capital of Chile - Pucon, is a tad touristy but with beautiful national parks, lakes and SA biggest active volcano on your door step, you can put up with a bit of expensive chiche. After arriving to blue skies and 28 degrees we decided andy should climb the active volcano, Pops would take he softer, less strenuous option of walking around the national park and lakes. Andy awoke at 6.15am all enthusiastic but by the time his group got to the bootom of the snow capped volcano the weather had turned for the worst and at...

Jan 8, 2007 - Compartments

Been reworking my plans, seeing what I can do, the one option that came to me the other day when I was leaving Pucón I was talking to a woman that is a part of the hostel that is working on building a house there. I was telling her my story of leaving and not having a purpose and she said to me that she wished she had heard my story sooner; she could have helped me find something around there. So when I started think about what I would do if I didn't get out of Chile I thought of her. I emailed the hostel to see if they would pass a...

Dec 30, 2006 - New wave

Just checking in, revising thoughts as they revise in my head. So I am back. That is back to not liking this travel thing. I think it's not really the travel thing, more the having no direction or purpose. I feel like no matter where I go that follows me, something that I have struggled with since I started traveling almost 3 weeks ago. It backs off every once in a while, when I find interesting people but it is always there, lingering. I can not do this without purpose, I must find it or leave. But then there is the question of whether I...

Dec 22, 2006 - Rain!

I am in Pucón now and it's raining. I am very happy to see rain, it was so dusty and polluted in Santiago that rain is a nice change. The green is wounderful as well. Here are some preliminary links of here. this is where I am staying http://www.ecole.cl It's a nice an cozy place, woodstove and Christmas tree. the stove pipe goes through my room right next to the head of my bed and makes the room nice and warm. The people all seem very nice, low key, more the outdoor type rather then the hosteling, traveling type. I feel right at home....

Dec 2, 2006 - Pucon, Chile

Day Two was spent mostly on the bus as the drive south to Pucon was 707km. On the way, we stopped in the small city of Santa Cruz and by the time we got there the effects from the night before were beginning to wear off! We visited the Museo de Colchagua, Chile's biggest private museum. The Museum was built in 1995 by an obsure local millionaire, Carlos Cardoen, who made his fortune dealing in weapons. For many years he was on the Top 10 list of the most wanted criminals by the US government. After an amnesty, he now can't leave Chile...

Mar 7, 2006 - Pucon - Home to the Volcan Vallarrica

6/3 Packing this morning and short trip to the city. Hours spent on the net. Had doggies for dinner? Went back to Javier he was just about to call out the search party. Quickly packed our bags said our goodbyes to Jav his mum, niece and dad and were off to the bus stop. We are all prepared for our night on the bus as we have sleeping bag, food and drinks. This is going to be a long 11hrs trip. We are in for a surprise though. The bus is specious with big comfy chairs that recline all the way, and sloping leg rest is also there. Part of the...
