Mar 10, 2019 - Volcanoes of the Lakes District

We based ourselves in Villarrica at Hostel Don Juan for two nights and explored some of the lakes and volcanoes that are in this area. Walking along the black beach we bumped into a Canadian couple we'd met in Puerto Varas while staying at the same hotel and decided to head to a bar for drinks and to swap stories. When we were all in Puerto Varas it was cold and raining and here the weather is very warm with tops of 29 degrees. They are older than us and have been travelling by bus. Well Volcano Villarrica (known as Devil's House to the...

Jan 8, 2018 - Leaving Pucon heading to Santiago known as the Waiting City

As we sit in our room overlooking the Lago Villarrica, I have just added a few photos that did not make the cut from the last seven days of travel. I hope you enjoy and I hope to back when we are in Rosiary Valley to Casona Matetic, the top vineyard in the region for two days of wine tasting, so please do not feel disappointed if you do not receive any updates"......... Anyhow had a nice morning in Pucon and found the real playa (beach) rather than marina, took a few more Volcano photos as there visible today from the beach. Packed up and...

Jan 7, 2018 - Driving to Pucon and towards the active Volcanos

We pick up the Nissan Jeep from the airport only to be told there was no sat vas available and it was Ok because we were on,y heading North. This was not a good start but the use of our google maps on iPhone we managed to navigate the 400km to Pucon and actually planned a stop on route by Lago Calafquen. We arrived a hotel Antumalal overlooking Lago Villarica , the hotel is well known for its glamorous guests, as Neil Armstrong, James Stewart and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. I am sure they were allocated our room as Liz was 'ere in 59...

Oct 22, 2017 - Pucon, Chile

The drive towards Villarica was spectacular because it was a bright blue day with billowing white clouds. There were two volcanoes, snow topped, along with all the other mountains the entire ride. Despite being a five hour ride, it seemed shorter, maybe because it was so scenic and maybe because I have good book on tape I'm listening to. I booked this cabana through booking.com and asked the owners for the coordinates to put them into my Garmin. (I brought my own Garmin with me along with a South America chip since renting one would have...

Mar 2, 2017 - Pucon

Thurs Mar 2nd Pucon Traffic and the water pump were the sounds last night, but better than dogs and music. Still dark @ 7am…then the rain started and only stopped at 1pm. Easy decision to stay in camp, drink coffe and do more hours planning our route. Plan to take a ferry at end of lake Pirihueico , to the 40km border road over the Andes and to San Martin de los Andes ,Argentina. Could take 2 days to do this, we are not sure of the ferry times and how long is the journey…or what condition or how high the pass is.. Weather looks promising....

Mar 1, 2017 - 1 March 2017 - Pucon, Chile

A long drive day yesterday (12 hours) through agricultural country - fruit trees and veggies everywhere you looked. Motorway all the way so we stopped every couple of hours at service stations for a break. Had an interesting cappucino - coffee with whipped cream on top. Not what I was expecting, but not bad! Rain most of the way, some of it very heavy which could change our plans for the next few days (our climb up the volcano tomorrow is not happening because of the weather, fingers crossed I will get to do it on Thursday) Today...

Feb 28, 2017 - Truck travel

We arrived in Pucon after an 11 hour road trip. Driving was broken up by regular stops at Pronto (pictured), a local quick stop gas place that would at home on Route 66 with its chips, soda, and burgers. We are passengers with Dragoman, an England-based travel company owned in part by Intrepid. Dragoman specializes in overland trips and features in-house designed and built semi-custom passenger vehicles fashioned out of Mercedes lorries. They hold 23 plus a crew of two who are trip leaders, not guides. Each truck is given a female name....

Feb 27, 2017 - Pucon-Caburgua

Monday 27 Feb – Tuesday 28. Pucon-Caburgua. Arrived 10:30 am into Pucon. Fortunately our bus was the only one at the station and we had the place to ourselves, although a young man watched us for about 30 mins ,we had a brief conversation using google translate. Took near 3 hrs to build bikes, had problems with cross threaded nut for a bike rack, then both pumps failed ! At least the sun was out, about 30C. Bike shop only 2 blocks away, bought new pump , fixed one of ours. Pucon is the adventure town of the area, ..think small...

Jan 18, 2014 - Santiago to Pucon, Chile

Saturday 18th January 2014 Santiago Chile We arrived in Santiago at about 6.00pm on Friday, approximately 6-7 hours late. We never found out why the flight was delayed but it was quite smooth and the crew were very pleasant. We took a taxi from the airport to our hotel in the centre of the city. The hotel was quite old with no air conditioning and very basic. Santiago is quite busy with many people shopping late on Friday. We went out to a restaurant and had a quarter chicken, chips and salad, then home to bed around 11.00pm. Up quite late...

Dec 13, 2013 - Lakes and Patagonia in Argentina and Chile

Well it's not subtle but it's fun and comfortable traveling in 'Frank" the bright yellow giant-size Tucan overland truck (Mercedes-Benz). Plenty of space for my starting group of 11 from Santiago, plus a Tucan guide and driver. Then we picked up 6 more along the way in Bariloche, the next town across the border in Argentina, but Frank seats at least 30 and we even have a car fridge and library. On the long trips we stop for picnic 'truck lunch' along the way - it's great to make our own sandwiches with lots of salad and so far we've had...
