Can you imagine a place with a more interesting name? We were really looking forward to being able to say to ourselves that we had been to Antofagasta. ... I don’t believe that nature makes ugly scenery. As we approached Antofagasta, we were astounded to see a massive coal-fired electrical generating plant polluting the clear blue sky with billowing black smoke. ... I had to check myself though, when I realized that there was no possibility of hydroelectric power out here in the vast desert and I was certain to expect electrical power when I settled into our hotel in the city.I don’t believe that nature makes ugly scenery. Nous ne faisons aujourd'hui que 175km. Le camioneur nous laisse a Antofagasta, la grande ville du coin et nous continuons encore jusqu'a San Pedro de Atacama. ... Al dia siguiente cruzamos los 400km de decierto "el desierto mas harido del mundo" hasta Antofagasta, la ciudad mas grande de la region. ... Dicen que en algunos lugares del decierto no ha llovido desde la llegada de los españoles!! De alli seguimos directo hacia San Pedro de Atacama.Nous ne faisons aujourd'hui que 175km. I just had to be sure to be in Antofagasta by Monday 7 April at 8am. ... Decided in one of those moments of clarity to bin Bolivia (by all accounts it should not be btw)and head to Antofagasta today "chancing my luck" at the airport in Calama. ... If Comet Air would put the correct phone number on their website I wouldn´t have had this piece of "chancing my luck"! Anyway, I decided to get the bus to Calama this morning meaning to change my flight at the airport as I said then realised in the second moment of clarity that the bus I was on went all the way to Antofagasta in a further 3 hours. ... This meant binning the flight between Calama and Antofagasta (unemployment wasn´t what it used to be you know!) Used the Spanish I have to get myself sorted out at the terminal in Calama and here I am. ... Are you listening Signor Ryanair? Headed to Tourist info when I got here in Antofagasta to find none of them spoke English so it was another Spanish/hand waving experience for BTT until I got a hotel sorted and some info leaflets in ENGLISH. ...

Antofagasta is a great place to be stuck! The city has a great feel! It`s funny, because I wasn`t all that excited about coming here. ... She also wanted to know if we had tomato paste where I came from, if I had a house in Antofagasta, and where I slept if I didn`t have a house. ... Antofagasta rocks! I love it here! I went to bed that night with the joy of knowing that, for the first time in my entire trip, I didn`t have to set an alarm! Wheee! Saturday brought even more fun and relaxation. ...
