Aug 9, 2012 - Teslin, Yukon Territory

A cool cloudy morning with temperatures in the low 50’s. It rained heavily last night starting around 22:00PM and rained most of the night. I left the Pioneer RV Park at 10:40AM. I went to Wal-Mart for a couple of things but they did not have what I wanted. I left there and went across the street to the Canadian Super Store and got what I wanted. I was in both places for a total of twenty minutes. I did not need a cart but was amazed that to get a cart you have to pay $1.00 Canadian and when you return the cart you get your dollar back. I...

Jul 29, 2012 - Day 69 Skagway to Teslin

Day 69: Skagway to Teslin, 115 miles to Yukon RV Park. We stayed here on the way up to Alaska, but it worked to stay here again. We had a nice day for the trip up here from Skagway and again, we had beautiful scenery! No critters seen today. There probably won't be an update tomorrow, we're covering the same territory we comvered on the way up from Watson Lake.

Jul 1, 2012 - Telsin, YT Pop 470

July 1, 2012 Teslin, YT – population 470 Today we traveled the Alaska Highway for the first time to the small village of Teslin. Teslin is bordered by the waters of Nisutlin Bay and Teslin Lake. Until the turn of the century this was the summer camp or meeting place of the Tlingit tribe from southern Alaska. “Teslin” is the Tlingit word for “Long Narrow Water.” The lake is 78 miles long, 2 miles wide with a maximum depth of 700 feet. As we traveled today, Spike announced over the radio that we were going to take a break at the “continental...

Jun 29, 2012 - Yukon Motel & RV Park

Stayed at Yukon Motel & RV Park for two nights in a Water & Electric only site in Teslin, YT. Our motorcoach was 25 feet from the shore of Teslin Lake, YT and next to the Nisutlan Bay Bridge. The lake was extremely full of water due to all of the rain and snow melt. This is the kind of back yard that RVers can experience on a daily basis; every time we move the coach, we get a new back yard and it doesn't get much better than this. Once again, we especially enjoyed the free Wi-Fi while we have no cell phone or satellite TV service, even if...

Jun 29, 2012 - Teslin, YT

So I've been a bit lazy getting the updates out. So the best way to catch up is a bit at a time. Our first stop after leaving Watson Lake was Teslin, YT. As you saw in the photos, it rained and rained. We saw some beautiful views as we do on each leg, but rainy and sloppy windows don't make for optimal photographs. Nevertheless, we still snapped a few good ones. We stopped halfway for gas and propane at a typical station in this part of the world. A little different from our pretty stations with waiting rooms and car washes. There wasn't...

Jun 28, 2012 - Telson

Drove 161 miles today to Teslin Lake. About the size of Attaberry with 2 gas stations, restaurant, gift shop, garage and museum. Lots of great scenery and a great waterfall. Just outside of town people have been leaving messages, their names, etc spelled out in rocks on the banks along the road. Not so much wildlife today. Turned cooler and started raining in the night. Heater and electric blanket feel good.

Jun 28, 2012 - Teslin Lake

we traveled to Teslin Lake. It was a fairly uneventful trip. Miles of snow topped mountains, clear fast flowing streams and rivers and lush, green forest. It is simply majestic. You are so alone here. The Yukon Territory covers an area of 186,000 miles. The population is 33,000. 27,000 of these people live in Whitehorse. The remainder is scattered throughout. We crossed the continental divide. If a leaf fell to the west it would flow in the Swift River to the Pacific Ocean. If it fell to the east it would flow in the Rancheria River to the...

Jun 17, 2012 - Watson Lake to Teslin,Yukon

Yesterday, Saturday, was our best viewing day for wildlife with Thursday coming in as 2nd best day. We started today with 16 black bears, 4 grizzly bears, 4 moose, 3 elk or caribou, and countless or at least >50 sheep and bisons. Truly amazing and all along the Alaska Highway without ever leaving the main highway. We stayed in Watson Lake last night which is for its Signpost Forest. Started back when they were building the Alaska highway in 1942 and someone posted a sign stating how far home. Well now there are over 10,000 signs and it is a...

Jun 12, 2012 - Day 22, Watson Lake to Teslin, Yukon territory

At last! They reopened the highway last night about 10pm. All semis and commercial vehicles were allowed to go first. Then people with cars that didn't have a place to stay. They recommended all people in hotels and RV's wait until morning to leave. Engines were starting about 5am in the park. We left about 10am after most of the RV's were gone. Last night we shared dinner with our neighbors from Oregon, Don and John. We supplied pork paprikash with noodles and they supplied grilled pork chops. They also fed us quite a few drinks, including...

May 20, 2012 - Muncho Lake to Teslin Lake Yukon Gov. Campground, YK

Sunday, May 20, 2012 Muncho Lake Provincial Park, BC to Teslin Lake Yukon Government Campground, YK 336 miles TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes “sight-seeing.” – Daniel J. Boorstin Today we were pretty active and definitely were strenuously searching for adventures (and wildlife)….we found both. Slept great and got up with the alarm at 7AM. It was cloudy but not quite as cold...
