Jul 27, 2009 - Haines Junction, Yukon
After leaving Tok we had a 100 mile ride to the Canadian border. We made it thru customs with no problems and headed south towards Haines Junction. It was a miserable drive from the border to Haines Junction, about 150 miles. The section of the Alaskan highway in the Yukon is a joke, it is nothing but one continuous frost heave, as you look down the road it looks like waves on the ocean. We could only travel at 40mph and that was pushing it, we bounced so bad that in one spot we bent the hitch between the car and the motorhome. This is a...

Jul 25, 2009 - Alaska Highway - Yukon Territory
Our route today: Alaska Highway - Mile marker 776 to Mile marker 980.8 This morning, we worked on updating this journal and looked thru the photos we had taken the last couple of days to make some notes of where and what we had photographed. It is easy to lose track. We decided to do a little truck and house cleaning this morning. After travelling thru two construction areas, and squishing millions of bugs on the front of the trailer and truck, our rig was pretty dirty inside and out. We shook out the throw rugs, swept and washed the...

May 15, 2009 - Haines Junction, YK
We find our first herd of Bison on the road about ½ mile from Laird. The huge beasts lumber across the road at their own pace or park themselves in the middle of the road. There are many young calves nursing or kicking up their heals beside their Moms. In the early morning we also catch black bears eating vegetation along the road. They are often more shy and quickly move into the woods. The mountain goats are also numerous in this stretch of highway. We have the challenge of getting to Anchorage for a race Michelle is running on Sunday. We...

Aug 30, 2008 - Haines Junction
Left Anchorage early and headed north. We wanted to get in a long day of driving and at least make it over the Canadian border. Well, we made it over the border and then some. After a long day of driving, we pulled into a campground at Lake Kluane only to find a "no tent camping" sign because of bears in the area. We kept driving and made it to Haines Junction by early evening. Whew! It sure felt good to stop that night. It also felt good to have gone so far in one day. The kids did great in the car. We listened to music and books on tape -...

Aug 21, 2008 - Haines Junction, YT
Another day of travel going to Haines Junction today. Again some good-some bad roads. The Alder trees are really showing the bright yellows along the way. Again there were lots of mountains, and wonderful blue lakes. It was mid 60 degrees. When we got to Haines Junction, we power sprayed the truck and RV to get most of the dirt and grime off. They were a mess!

Jul 29, 2008 - Travel day to Haines
Travel day, going to Haines in Alaska. We left Tok, Alaska early in the morning, hoping to make good time, but we encountered a tremendous amount of road construction. In some places we had to wait for a pilot car to take us through the construction areas. The wait for these cars sometimes ran as much as 45 minutes. With this slow going, we only made it to a little past Haines Junction, before almost 10 hours driving, night was upon us. The evening made for some lovely pictures of light reflecting off of snow topped mountains.

Jul 22, 2008 - Tok, AK Sourdough Campground to Haines Junction, YT Canada
Still not in a location to send pictures. In fact we are in the same campground in Haines Junction, YT Canada that we stayed in 8 days ago. I did not realize that we spent so little time in Alaska. As Dad said it feels like we have been gone a month ha ha. Our mileage was not big but our travel day was 10 hours with the road construction, but we wanted to get beyond all of the construction and we did. Sandy if you decide to go to Skagway you will have the same route we did today and return the same way, about 1,000 miles. The frost heaves...

Jul 18, 2008 - Haines Junction, Yukon
I couldn't send an update last night as we boondocked at US Fish and Wildlife Service campground 20 miles north of the Yukon border. It rained all night last night and today we saw fresh snow on the peaks as we came south. Yesterday afternoon and today were the worst roads we have been on. Yesterday it was road construction and frost heaves in Alaska. Today it was frost heaves in the Yukon. Much of today was 30 to 45 mph on a paved highway. I did not want to go over the frost heaves too fast or something on the truck and or trailer would...

Jul 6, 2008 - Miles, miles, miles and a MOOSE!
today we left Anchorage right about 6am, and made miles, miles, miles - 601 of them in fact. We stopped tonite in Haines Junction, Yukon. We did finally get to see a moose tho - he was way off the highway, but my zoon is pretty good - so hopefully you can see him. Sharon asked to see some pictures of the teardrop, so here they are. She's a little worse for wear, but still all in all, holding up pretty well. We were able to find an electric blanket, but last nite in Anchorage was really too warm to use it. I've developed a doozy of a cold,...

Jul 5, 2008 - Tok to Haines Junction
This was an uneventful day. Just more of the mind-boggling scenery. - We did stop by a lake, and as it was a hot day (+27) we waded in up to our knees. We couldn't convince Harry to take his shoes off & join us. When we mentioned it, he ran away faster than a spooked caribou! - Had a car pass us, and motion for me to roll down my window. He informed me that we were losing a liquid. Turns out that we lost the cap off of the fresh water tank. As we always carry fresh water we will have to get a new one in Whitehorse. Oh the trials and...

Jun 21, 2008 - Grizzly sighting!
Hello Everyone, We had a beautiful day in Haines Junction. We are camping on Kluane Lake and spent the day hiking in Kluane National Park. We spent 3 hours ascending 1400 feet to Sheep Mountain to view the Dahl sheep, but unfortunately after all that work, they were not on the mountain....lots of poop though! On our way out of the park we were rewarded however with a huge grizzly walking in the road. We were thankfully in the car! It was an awesome sight! Tomorrow we are packing up, and will head to TOK, Alaska and will stay in TOK for four...
