Aug 23, 2018 - Kluane Park and Mt. Logan

Today we awoke to glorious sunshine. There was low lying fog in the mountains but the tops were visible. We crossed our fingers. We picked up a coffee and headed to the airport. We were soon joined by a couple from Barcelona, Spain. Together we watched the Kluane Glacier Air Tours plane land. People were smiling! Great! The views were awesome. We met Alex our pilot, went through the safety drill and boarded. Gord rode co-pilot, the Spanish couple sat in the middle and I had the last seat on the opposite side of the plane to Gord in a Cessna...

Jul 8, 2018 - Travel to Haines Junction

Had a fairly long day traveling today, nearly 390 miles. Tok Cutoff has quite a bit of 35 mph due to undulating road. Crossed the fault line of the Danali fault earthquake in 2002. You can see where the road shifted at least one lane horizontally at that time. Stopped at Fast Eddies in Tok for lunch, a good place. Retraced our footsteps to Haines Junction, seeing a brown bear along the way. It is a nice feeling to be heading toward home as we crossed the Alaska-Yukon border at mid-afternoon.

Jun 23, 2017 - Flight Over The Glaciers

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Canada chapter Yukon has to say about Glacier Air Tours: The Kluane National Park and Reserve consists primarily of the St Elias Mountains and the world’s largest non-polar ice fields. Two-thirds of the park is glacier - interspersed with valleys, glacial lakes, alpine forest, meadows and tundra. The Kluane Ranges (averaging a height of 2500m) are seen along the western edge of the Alaska Highway. A greenbelt wraps around the base of these mountains, where most of the animals and...

Jun 21, 2017 - To Haines Junction

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Canada chapter Yukon has to say about Haines Junction: For long segments west of Whitehorse, the Alaska Highway has been modernized to the point of blandness. Fortunately, this ends abruptly in Haines Junction. From here the road parallels legendary Kluane National Park and the St Elias Mountains. It’s goodbye flatlands when you reach Haines Junction and see the sweep of imposing peaks looming over town. You’ve reached the stunning Kluane National Park and this is the gateway....

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We were surprised to see how tiny Haines Junction actually is. I read that about 500 people make their permanent homes here. It’s here that the highway from Haines, on the Pacific coast, meets the Alaska Highway, thus giving the wee town its name. The Lonely Planet says that the 238km drive to Haines offers land-bound travellers a likely highlight for their Alaska-Yukon adventure. However, we had come to see the region from the air, and we couldn’t be more excited. We stopped in at the office of Glacier Air Tours...

We are actually headed home today (we still have several weeks of travels yet) and will be covering a lot of area that we already have covered in previous blogs, so I will only add a new entry if something is interesting and new. On our drive we finally got a picture of the Alaskan pipeline. The pipeline zig zags across the land so that it can expand and contract without buckling with temperature changes. It’s 800 miles long and the diameter is 48 inches. It was the largest privately funded construction project at the time costing $8...

Alaska Adventure

Aug 4, 2016 - To Haines Junction, YT

Today's trip took us back into Canada for a stop in Haines Junction before heading to Haines, AK. It was an interesting ride due to the road construction going on. Upon arriving in Haines Junction we had to change our plans as the territorial campground we planned on staying at was full. We went to plan B and only spent one night here before moving on.

Going Down MC's-LANE

Jul 15, 2016 - Haines Junction

July 14th Continuing on this beautiful remote stretch of road we stop at almost every pull out to read about the history of the road. The entrance to Kluane National Park is almost as soon as we start driving and Haines Junction is only an hour and a half away where they have an amazing, information, national park and first nation’s interpretive centre. We are also back into free Wi-Fi which is just not available in Alaska where even the RV Parks charge you by the minute. There is also one of the best equipped small grocery stores we have...

Aug 5, 2015 - Haines Junction YT – Pine Lake Campground

Left Alaska for the first time today. We cleared Canadian customs at Beaver Creek YT. We had been told they were confiscating chicken, turkey and eggs, but they never even asked if we had those items. We ate chicken for dinner 4 straight nights and didn’t need to!!!!! It will be a loooooooong time before we have chicken again. Stopped at the International Border to take a couple of pictures. If you look along the International Boundary between Canada and the United States in any forested area, it will appear simply as a 20 foot cleared...

Retired at Last!

Jun 2, 2015 - Moose and Bear and Fox Oh My!

Drove out of Haines today. Due to the way the border lines are, to drive in and out of places like Skagway and Haines, you have to cross from the Yukon, to British Columbia, cross an international border into Alaska for about 40 miles or so, and then reverse that and do it again to get out. There area ferries that could take us from Skagway to Haines, which in reality are only about 13 miles apart, but since we have a big camper, it is actually cheaper for us to drive “the golden Circle” than to take the ferry across. The drive really is...

Aug 20, 2014 - Day 62 Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, Canada

Hi folks - We're back on the blog. I know we haven't made an entry for several days but to be honest not much has happened. This starts the process of leaving Alaska, heading to our departure point of Haines. We've had a lot of rain recently, but the last couple of days were sunny, although most days, there's rain in the mountains. You last saw us at Glacier View RV Park on the Glennallen Highway. That road is the primary road to leave Anchorage and Canada. At the town of Glennallen an intersection takes you south to Valdez, AK and the...
