Aug 25, 2018 - Carcross (Skagway)

Today I did a day-trip to Skagway on the White Pass & Yukon Route railway. I’d booked the trip before I decided to go to Skagway & catch the ferry but decided I wanted to do it anyway because the railway is supposed to be one of the most scenic in the world & an engineering marvel. The original railway went from Skagway to Whitehorse & was built to transport miners during the Klondike gold rush. It was started in 1898 & built in just over 2 years, reaching Whitehorse in July 1900. It doesn’t go from Whitehorse any more, it terminates at...

Aug 24, 2018 - Whitehorse to Carcross

Today I experienced something I thought I’d never do & will probably not have an opportunity again. I went on a dog sled ride (although the sled had wheels). The Caribou Crossing trading post has a huge facility with 135 working Huskies which compete in all the long distance sled races. The dogs need to keep in shape in the summer so they exercise them using the carts plus give tourists a unique experience. I was doubly lucky because I’d only travelled 65 km from Whitehorse so got there before the cruise people invaded from Skagway. The...

Canada 2018

Jun 24, 2017 - Carcross

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Canada chapter Yukon has to say about Carcross: Long a forgotten gold-rush town, cute little Carcross, 73km south of Whitehorse, is an evocative stop. There are four trains weekly in summer from Skagway to Carcross (and vice versa) on the White Pass & Yukon Route, June to August. These five-hour rides over White Pass access a lot of remote scenery that the shorter regular trips from Skagway to Bennett don’t cover. There are packages that include bus transport in one direction to...

Jun 24, 2017 - All Aboard For Bennett

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here are some excerpts from the HelloBC website blog written by Murray Lundberg, about the town of Bennett, BC: “In any list of BC’s ghosts towns, the furthest north and one of the more remote is always Bennett, located in the far northwest corner of the province, pinched between the Yukon Territory and Alaska. No roads reach Bennett, but a few thousand visitors arrive each year by train, boat, and floatplane as well as by hiking the world-famous Chilkoot Trail. Only a single building remains standing from the hectic days...

May 26, 2015 - Carcross and Tahkini Hot Springs

May 26 – Skagway to Tahkini Hot Springs We left Skagway today, and went back up the South Klondike Highway, again passing through British Columbia and back into the Yukon. On the way back out, we stopped at the town of Carcross. This is a very small town. It has a stop for the White Pass/ Yukon Railroad in the summer. A lot of tourists come through here, whether through driving back and forth from Skagway as we did, by train, or by excursion by bus, from their cruise ships in Skagway. In this small community, there is a visitor center and a...

Jul 12, 2014 - Alaska Tour - Carcross & Caribou Crossing - Stop #7

Hello Everyone, Today we ventured back from Skagway, Alaska thru the rock slide that closed the only road in and out of town! They had just cleared a path large enough for our RV, and had to be guided thru by a service truck! We headed back into the Yukon Territory of Canada towards Whitehorse, stopping in Carcross and then Caribou Crossing. In Carcross we had a nice breakfast and shopping, but the real fun started at Caribou Crossing. Here we had a chicken lunch, followed by a tour of their museum. After that, Jeannie and I were treated to...

Aug 4, 2013 - Carcross, Yukon

Today we drove 70 km south to the town of Carcross to explore the area south of Whitehorse. Our first stop was the beautiful Emerald Lake. The sun reflects off the glacial silt in the water and creates several very pretty shades of blue. After getting settled in the town’s only campground, we went for a walk. There is a little booklet called “A Walking Tour of Carcross Historic Buildings”. There are some new buildings in town but the majority are old wooden houses and buildings. The booklet gives the history of each house including the...

Jul 16, 2013 - Yukon Expedition & White Pass Scenic Railway

We took an excursion today after we moored in Skagway. We decided to experience the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway. Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, the WP&YR is a marvel of engineering despite harsh weather and challenging geography faced by thousands of railroad construction workers. The narrow gauge train started in Skagway, and went up nearly 3,000 feet in 20 miles. The trip from Skagway to Carcross, Yukon was 67 miles; however we stopped at Fraser, BC and boarded a bus for the remaining trip up to Carcross. After...

Aug 7, 2012 - Carcross, Yukon Territory

Damp and cool this morning with heavy clouds. I left the RV at 06:50AM and walked over to the White Pass & Yukon Route ticket office. I browsed the gift shop and then got my ticket at 07:10AM when the ticket office opened. We left by a small tour van at 07:30AM for Carcross, Yukon Territory. The clouds lifted some and it was quite a scenic drive to Carcross. After we went through Canadian Customs the weather started to break and we could see sunshine ahead. It turned in to a very nice drive. We arrived in Carcross at the White Pass & Yukon...

May 20, 2012 - Carcross, YT

Sun, 20 May: Another wonderful day driving the Alaska Highway. We had every intention (honestly we did!) of taking it easy. But the highway is in excellent condition west of Watson Lake so we pressed on to Carcross, YT. Our daily numbers are: 255.1 miles, 29.6 gallons, 8.6 mpg. We slugged in bed until almost eight, and they crawled out from beneath the covers with great reluctance. We enjoyed a lazy breakfast and took our time about getting underway. Consequently, we didn't roll wheels until 0920. Bob drove to the nearby Tempo fuel station...

Aug 18, 2011 - Tok, AK, to Carcross, YT

The road from Tok to the border is not bad. In fact, the last 10 miles or so is great. Soon after crossing the border and going thru Canadian Customs, it takes a turn for the worse. This section of the Alaskan Highway is all gravel mostly over permafrost with LOTS of frost heaves. Trucks barrel along spewing rocks at your windshield and the side of your vehicle. Tony and I made up covers for our windshields and put them on in Tok during one of the rainless spells. I used a blue tarp and duct tape, it’s a Florida car so the blue tarp kind of...
