Aug 7, 2012 - Carcross, Yukon Territory
Damp and cool this morning with heavy clouds. I left the RV at 06:50AM and walked over to the White Pass & Yukon Route ticket office. I browsed the gift shop and then got my ticket at 07:10AM when the ticket office opened. We left by a small tour van at 07:30AM for Carcross, Yukon Territory. The clouds lifted some and it was quite a scenic drive to Carcross. After we went through Canadian Customs the weather started to break and we could see sunshine ahead. It turned in to a very nice drive. We arrived in Carcross at the White Pass & Yukon...

May 20, 2012 - Carcross, YT
Sun, 20 May: Another wonderful day driving the Alaska Highway. We had every intention (honestly we did!) of taking it easy. But the highway is in excellent condition west of Watson Lake so we pressed on to Carcross, YT. Our daily numbers are: 255.1 miles, 29.6 gallons, 8.6 mpg. We slugged in bed until almost eight, and they crawled out from beneath the covers with great reluctance. We enjoyed a lazy breakfast and took our time about getting underway. Consequently, we didn't roll wheels until 0920. Bob drove to the nearby Tempo fuel station...

Aug 18, 2011 - Tok, AK, to Carcross, YT
The road from Tok to the border is not bad. In fact, the last 10 miles or so is great. Soon after crossing the border and going thru Canadian Customs, it takes a turn for the worse. This section of the Alaskan Highway is all gravel mostly over permafrost with LOTS of frost heaves. Trucks barrel along spewing rocks at your windshield and the side of your vehicle. Tony and I made up covers for our windshields and put them on in Tok during one of the rainless spells. I used a blue tarp and duct tape, it’s a Florida car so the blue tarp kind of...

Jun 22, 2011 - No rain, blue skys
Wednesday: We left Watson Lake at 10:45 am and drove about 260 miles to Carcross, Yukon. We stopped at Rancheria Falls parking lot and walked the 1/3 mile to the falls. There were two falls, but they weren’t very spectacular (in my opinion) as water only fell about 5-6 feet. They were wide, but very short. We decided to stop at Carcross because we saw a car/RV wash station, in which our vehicles were in dire need of a bath. There is also a campground here, so decided to spend the night. It is a very small town with a gas station/store/small...

Campground: Montana Services & RV Park This morning Jeff and Richard fueled up our trucks and we all went shopping at the Real Canadian Super Store. What a great place. Murray and Shelle drove in from Takhini Hot Springs last night to shop and Mike and Sally stopped on their way from Carmacks. Wonder of all wonders, Jeff and we left about 12:45 PM. Of course it was about a 45 minute drive to Carcross. We did stop for pictures at Emerald Lake and the Carcross desert. Emerald Lake is also called Rainbow Lake by Yukoners because the...

Jul 28, 2010 - Carcross
Wednesday 28 July 2010 A change of plans as we had heard from a couple of sources that although the road to Ross River was open it was metal and narrow and the mining trucks consider that they have the right of way and the road is not wide enough for them plus another vehicle. Also we were told by the Information Centre and locals in Watson Lake that in their opinion there is no scenery of value, so we decided to head for Carcross, which is south of Whitehorse. Can't stay on the main roads all the time. We looked around the Sign Park Forest...

Jul 17, 2010 - Left in the Desert
I was exploring the Carcross Desert, the smallest desert in the world. All of a sudden, I heard the motor home start up and saw it start moving. I started waiving like mad, trying to catch Jim’s attention or the attention of the other two motor homes traveling with us – no dice. The three of them pulled out of the parking lot, on down the road. So here I am, in the desert, all alone, no cell phone (not that they work up here), no purse, no coat, no money. Did have my camera, though! As I made my way up to the parking area, a couple of other...

Jun 17, 2010 - Carmacks to Carcross
Dad researched a bunch of options for today and asked if we needed to see much of Whitehorse after grocery shopping. Since we'd thoroughly checked it out last trip, we decided that shopping (this is a BIG town!) was enough and we could drive through to Carmacks. This takes us off the Alaska highway a little way, but we can leave the trailer in Carcross for a day and take the truck down to Skagway, AK, on a day trip. Then there is a highway to link us back to the Alaska highway without many extra miles. COOL idea! So, we picked up lots of...

May 26, 2010 - Skagway, Alaska
For our day in Skagway, we decided to go on the same excursion we went on last year, the Yukon Scenic Drive. Liz and Chris were dying to go on this and while Joe and I could have done a different excursion or just walked around the town while they did this, we decided to join them as the scenery last year was just stunning and we had hopes we'd see a bear (or two) again as we saw one last year. Not just a bear, we were hoping for any kind of wildlife really. Our guide this time was Tom. I remember him from last year, although we had Tim...

Sep 8, 2009 - Haines to Carcross
Tuesday, September 8, 2009. Montana Services RV Park, Carcross, Yukon. Haines to Carcross This morning I was thinking about going kayaking but Tom's back wasn't doing much better and the fog had rolled in so I wouldn't have been able to see the mountains very well anyway. I opted to take a walk around Haines instead to get some exercise and to get any last photos I might have missed. It turned out to be the best thing I could have done. I took some music along and had a great walk. I got all kinds of photos of places we hadn't made it to...

Aug 24, 2009 - Carcross, Yukon Territory Canada (from Skagway AK), 8am - 9pm
Monday, 8-24-09 - Carcross Yukon (from Skagway) This was an 8 hour excursion leaving around 8:30am and getting back to Skagway around 4:30pm. At first I wondered if it would be too long, but it wasn't. We left the ship and took a coach/bus along the Klondike Highway out of Skagway to Carcross in the Yukon. We had to make sure we had our passports as we crossed into Canada and then back to the US on the way back. It is a beautiful drive with mountains everywhere (of course they've been everywhere in Alaska too!). As you go up in elevation,...

Jul 31, 2009 - Carcross, YT - Montana Service and RV Park
Our trip from Haines Junction to Carcross was pretty easy and fast. With the exception of a short stretch the highway was in good shape and there was only one delay of about 15 minutes for construction. As we went through Whitehorse we had cell coverage for about 10 minutes but then lost it and still don't have it in Carcross. Hopefully we will have it in Skagway when we drive down there tomorrow so we can get in touch with the girls again. That 10 minutes in Whitehorse was the only time we have had coverage since leaving North Pole, AK. We...
