Jun 24, 2017 - Cowshit in the morning....

Woke up early this morning in the farmlands of Canada. I do love the smell of cow shit in the morning. Short breakfast and we were off by 8 am. As we left Brooks, the rolling farm hills quickly gave way to open, flat spaces. Lots of hay and beautiful canola fields. Not a bad ride at first and we made great time with good speed and little traffic. But it went on and on and on. Lots of fields, cows, oil pumps and even a few windmills. Kind of the Texas of Canada. As we left the Canadian 1 and headed more south, the roads got a bit rougher...

May 25, 2012 - Day 2

Went to the Tire Shop & these guys were absolutely Good Samaritans! They first checked out Minot if they had shocks, no dice, then Fargo & they did so they got them, put them on & by 3:15 we were back on the road (after a slight bill!) but driving well & heading up to Canada. Slept in Weyburn, SA. By the way the first place we saw driving into Carrington was a Pizza Ranch. Go figure!

May 18, 2012 - Flat and bad lands

We travelled the width of North Dakota today through some big landscape and over long long empty roads. Since we are travelling west we are gaining time and today we gained another hour as we entered Saskatchewan. We travel an average of 500 km per day with several stops, we pretty much have everything with us so we are seldom stopping for food of coffee etc. I made a good deal I think; I do all the driving and Corry looks after my wet and dry (that is really a Dutch expression "natje and droogje) meaning food and drinks. Driving through...

Go West 2012

Jun 8, 2011 - June 7, 2011:Day 4-442 miles: Saskatchewan

Happy Birthday Rachel! Johnny laid down last night at 7:30PM (9:30 Eastern time) and said he just wanted to rest. He wakes up at 6:00AM from “his rest.” I was up late working on this blog (or “blob” as Darlene, good friend, writes). I was gently rocked to sleep by the non-wind here. Woke up to 63 degrees and more wind. Surely this qualifies to be a windy day. We fill up with gas ($4.049/gal) and head out. We travel through flat land and black dirt. It is so windy that Johnny fights to keep the truck on the road all day. From Hwy 29 we exit...

Sep 17, 2010 - into Saskatchewan

Sept 16th, Today, we are heading south and east, away from the mountains and foothills and into ranch land and the prairies. We are on a number of smaller roads---225,549 through Millarville, Okotoks—783,543 into High River then 23 into Vulcan 534-531 ,845,526 through Enchant,36 to 524 through Hays and then onto Hwy 1 into Medicine Hat. It has rained most of the day. The land has opened up into ranch land with lots of baled hay and some other crops. Here, we see men getting out of pick-up trucks with boots, belt buckles and hats—they're not...

Yukon Bound

Jul 4, 2010 - Happy 4th Of July

Today we left the reunion. It was a great weekend!! We spent some time with some of Rhonda's aunts, uncles & cousins, met some new people but most importantly, we got to spend some time with Rhonda's parent's and her brother. It was really nice. And we got to stay put for more than 1 day, which was also nice. The dogs did great!! They behaved themselves with the 150 or so people there, with the other dogs and even got to do a bunch of off leash in the yard. They loved that yard! It's a nice, huge, mowed area where they could run free and...

Jul 2, 2010 - Nestled in a beautiful little campground at Weyburn

Staying at the River Park Campground, very nice spot. We golfed Mainprize Golf course on July 1st -- it wasn't in very good shape and not really nice to golf on. Today, we golfed Weyburn and it is a beautiful course, kept up very well, and was a pleasure to golf. We're planning to stay here until July 7th, then move over to the Comfort Plus Campground just east of Regina. Really enjoying the free wireless. I'm just figuring out how to work this Trip Journal, so please be patient.

Jul 19, 2009 - North Dakota and into Saskatchewan Canada

After a quick breakfast we were on the road by 6:30 a.m. I think Bob was still in bed. He did not come out to see us off. However, I am sure that by the time we were gone, most were awake after I wound up that 6.7L Cummins and roared up the hill and out of the campground. Our route today was west on I94 to Jamestown, North Dakota and then North on US52 all the way to Portal, North Dakota where we crossed the border into Canada. The border crossing was quick. A few questions about ownership of the truck and trailer, show passport, how long...

May 7, 2008 - Into Canada we go

Our first stop is Weyburn,Saskatchewan,Canada. Lots of wide open spaces in North Dakota and lots of grain fields and cows so you'll have to put up with the pictures, Larry. Had a nice day of travel. After lots of research, and wondering and worrying about what to bring an what not for crossing the border, It went like a dream, he asked for our passports(just needed ids) and asked about the dogs records but otherwise his main concern was whether we had guns along, we told him no and he asked what about protection from wild animals in Alaska....

Oct 27, 2007 - Weyburn, Saskatchewan

Saturday October 27...8:30pm With Sherman hooked up to hydro, we had our little electric heater on for part of the night. That sure makes a big difference in keeping the chill off. There was some frost on the ground, and we're pretty sure it went below zero overnight, but we were comfortable sleeping. Surprisingly, we didn't get up until almost 7:45am, and it looked like a beautiful sunny day out. As Randy and Elaine like to sleep in on Saturday morning, I took Whiskey for a walk while Ruth made spaghetti sauce for tonight's dinner....

Sep 4, 2007 - Saskatoon to Weyburn...with a stop at Corner Gas!

We had a busy family weekend, with visits, meals and a little golf thrown in for good measure. Today is Tuesday and we're off to Weyburn Saskatchewan. It was a very windy drive... winds out of the south at 60-70 kph with gusts and we were traveling basically south east. It was also a funny day for weather, with cloud and rain in some places and sunny and hot in others. The highways that we've traveled in southern Saskatchewan are a mixed bag. But there seem to be sections on each road that are terrible in comparison with other provinces....
