Nov 29, 2006 - Regina Soccer Pitch Donates Soccer Equipment

The youth of Kenya have a love of sport- especially Soccer. It is played on the playgrounds, in the streets and anywhere a soccer ball and children are together in the same place. Many youth in Makina see it as a way out of the area- a chance to be discovered by a national scout and taken away to be a star. The trouble is that many children don't have shoes, let alone proper soccer equipment to play the game that they love. When we told the Regina Soccer Association about the We See You project, a member of the Association alerted the...

Oct 22, 2006 - Destination: Makina, Kenya

SaskTel's YOUTHnetwork Coordinator and Diversity Director met Dr. Pammla Petrucka from the University of Saskatchewan last summer, and learned about some of the work that her team is doing to send aid to developing countries, like Africa. When we heard about one particular clinic called Makina- located in the slums of Kibera, Kenya, we couldn't help but want to get involved in making a difference. Makina is a small region in the suburb of Kibera in Kenya that is considered one of the largest slums in all of Africa. With an estimated...

Saskatchewan, here we come. Somehow we missed the "Welcome to Saskatchewan" sign, so we will have to get that picture on the way out. It has been a long time since I drove into Saskatchewan, but it has not gotten any more populated. We did find a nice spot for lunch in Morse and have parked ourselves in Regina for a couple of days where we hope to explore some of the attractions.

Jul 5, 2006 - Back in Canada

The next time you find yourselves on a 10 hour drive across the praries, try this little game - we call it The Prarie Snooze. The rules are simple. You get comfortable in the driving seat (armrests down, cooler within reach) then you set the cruise control at, say, 120 km/h. Finally, whilst continuing to pay full attention to the road, you remove your hands from the steering wheel and feet from the pedals and you see how far you can drive without actually.. driving. There are many variables of course, including the camber of the road, the...

May 19, 2006 - Regina

May 17, 2006 After we left Calgary we travelled along the #1 Highway on another very hot day (30 C plus) stopping in Brooks for lunch. This a very dusty little town....Lakeside packers, the big animal processing plant there certainly has done nothing for the town. On to Medicine Hat for a stop at the grocery store. This city is a pretty, bustling place and the grocery store lot was so full we barely had room to park. We thought about going to Cypress hills to spend the night but it was so hot and we were tired that we stopped at the Eagle...

Aug 30, 2005 - On the Road

The day has finally arrived. The backpack is packed - with probably too much stuff :) I fly from Regina to Vancouver, overnight in Vancouver, and then off to Shanghai. I made my good-byes over the past week. Sorry if I didn't get to personally say good-bye, but I will be back (eventually). It was a strange feeling, leaving Regina.
