Jun 9, 2009 - RCMP depot

Gary and Marlene took us to the RCMP Depot today. It's the main training site for the RCMP, and a walk through the history of western Canada. They put about 2000 cadets through the program each year - one troop every week. A lot of potential officers. We were able to watch their parade and see about five troops put through their paces. The usual military style march past, with a really nice RCMP band. Unfortunately, it was just too cold and rainy to have the parade outdoors, so we were in the drill hall. The museum of the Dept was/is really...

Jun 8, 2009 - Regina

We're at it again! We left Calgary at about eight this morning, heading to Regina to see Janet's brother, Garry, and his wife Marlene. Got here at about five this afternoon. Pretty good day driving, though a bit cool, and with intermitant rain storms. Lots of wildlife today. Just outside of Calgary, a coyote searching a grassy field for gophers or mice. Then a couple of miles later, a red headed hawk stooped (I think that's the word) for a mouse or gopher in the median of the highway. Didn't have much time to see, as we were travelling at...

Jun 1, 2009 - We're Finished Full-timing

This post will be the official conclusion of this trip journal since today was the day we moved back into our house and officially ended our wonderful two years of full-time RV’ing. To start the day, we drove from Moose Jaw to Regina fairly early as we had a commitment to get into Regina Honda before 11:00 a.m. to pick up our new CR-V. We left the motorhome in Southland Walmart’s parking lot and drove the truck to the dealership, arriving about 10:00 a.m. After paying the balance owing, the salesman (Michael L.) reviewed the features of...

May 24, 2009 - Sondog Agility (NADAC) Trial

We drove up to Saskatoon on Friday afternoon so we could take part in the NADAC trial being held at the Sondog facility west of the city. Our hosts, Lois & Wes Meirau are very nice and gave us a great place to park the motorhome next to their indoor training facility where we could even hook up to power. It was level, too. Pat Summers, who we had met in North Carolina, flagged me down as I was walking the dogs and we had a good time visiting with her and her husband, Duncan, throughout the weekend. Pat and Duncan are full-time RVers who are...

May 18, 2009 - Back to Regina for a Few Days

On Monday, we brought Fran’s Mom over to his Dad’s place for lunch. She really enjoys getting out of the nursing home and it isn’t hard at all to wheel her over there and up the ramp into the house. After lunch we packed up and headed back to Regina. We made a stop in Moose Jaw to share our pecan pie with Mom and Dad over coffee and check out Dad’s work on their motorhome. The roof on their 1985 Class A has sagged and leaked and water got inside. Dad took on a big project to lift the roof, install aluminum trusses and replace the roof...

May 17, 2009 - Assiniboia, SK

Krista brought her kids to visit us and Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa Rust here in Assiniboia yesterday. We all spent some time at the nursing home then came back to the campground. This is the first time Grandma and Grandpa Rust have seen new baby Dakota. Dakota’s middle name is William (after Great Grandpa Rust). It was a very nice, mild day yesterday and the kids had lots of fun playing outside. Cheyenne (almost 6 yo) broke her right elbow last Tuesday on their new trampoline, but she didn’t let it hold her back from playing. Could be...

May 15, 2009 - The Motorhome’s Maiden Voyage

We’ve been REALLY busy all week moving into the motorhome and doing some cleaning up of the fifth wheel. We can’t do too much with it until we get it totally unloaded, though. We’ve also spent quite a bit of time running back and forth to various stores picking up new towels, garbage cans, etc. Then returning them and buying different new towels, garbage cans, etc.!!! On Thursday Fran took the fifth wheel to be stored at the RV dealer. We’ll leave it there until after June 1 when we can finish unloading it into our garage. (We regain...

May 13, 2009 - Cross country trek

Today we travelled almost coast to coast. From Galway to Trim for the last leg of our tour. Once again the land has changed, back into farm lands, forest and livestock. We broke our journey with a pilgramage to Clonmacnoise, home of an ancient Abbey founded by Cieran in the 6th century. This sacred place has a long history and you can get a real sense of it as you walk amongst the crosses, graves and ancient buildings. We finish our days journey at Trim a small town with a big castle. After such a long drive and finishing in rain we didn't...

May 12, 2009 - Golf!!

Did I mention the sun was shinning yesterday? Well is again today. And what a fine day for a game of golf. We head out this morning to see if we can get in a few holes at the Oughtergard Golf Course. Who knew every tuesday was tournament day? With a little sweet talk and good old Saskatchewan charm we were able to get a tee time for 3pm. So with a few hours to kill we took in the sites of the local castle Augnanure. It is actually a former watch tour built in the 16th century and home to those pirates the O'Flaghertys. We decided to take a...

May 12, 2009 - Reba's Visit to the Ortho Vet

Reba was assessed by Dr. Greg Harasen, Orthopedic Vet in Regina this morning. He examined her and took X-rays of her legs, hips and back. He initially observed some thickening in her right hind knee but didn’t find instability in either knee joint. It was the left leg that had gone lame on her in Texas. We left her there for the remainder of the examination. Cr. Harasen phoned us about one hour later. He reported that the X-rays and further examination disclosed very mild fluid build-up on the right knee and a small bone spur on her left...

May 11, 2009 - Our ‘New’ Motorhome

Finally – the day arrived to take possession of our new motorhome. It is a 2005 34 foot Triple E Embassy Class A motorhome with only 4,949 kilometres on it. It is beautiful! I took some ‘clean’ pictures. It will look a little different once all our stuff is in it. By the time we went over things with the couple we purchased it from and got the license plates, Fran barely had time to drive it to the campground before racing off to pick up his Dad from the bus. They came back to the campground for lunch then went to the General Hospital to...

May 11, 2009 - Monday and not at work.

Today is a travelling day. We packed our bags and continued north. Not a long drive, really a trip around the bay. Today we are heading for Galway actually a little north of Galway to Roscahill and the Ross Lake House Hotel. The countryside has changed again. We are in an area between the sea and long lakes on the edge of the Connemara. Our manor house a in a quiet remote area and we will be driving to see the sites. Once we check in we head further north to Connemara National Park and to visit the Kylemore Abbey and the spectacular...
