Aug 18, 2012 - Saskatchewan
Saturday, August 18 - Elk Island National Park We slept in until almost 8, then broke camp before breakfast. We ate our muffins and milk and blueberries by the lake, then walked along a boardwalk beside the lake. We drove the park roads, including Bison Loop. We were here in 1982, when Darren was a baby, Evan was 2 1/2, and Larry was attending a conference in Edmonton. It was late June, and we went out to Elk Island from the city one evening and saw the bison. We stayed until sunset, not realizing how late it was getting! Then, as now, we...

Aug 18, 2012 - A full day
Regina, SK. We had a very full day. Government House was constructed as a residence for the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Territories. The home has now been made into a museum. We just happened to show up the same day as the annual antiques auction so 1) it was hard to find a parking place, 2) we were the only ones touring the museum. The rooms are done up quite well and we learned a few things. We admired the Salesman Chairs. The front legs were shorter than the back so the salesman tended to slip forward. If he tried to slide...

Aug 17, 2012 - Tunnels
Regina, SK. Today we did the Tunnels of Moose Jaw tours. Unfortunately they don't allow photos so we had to borrow some. In the early 1900′s most of the large buildings in Moose Jaw were heated by steam. Engineers who tended the heating systems in the basements created a network of tunnels linking the buildings together so they could easily move themselves and equipment between buildings without freezing in the cold prairie winters. These tunnels were also utilized by others. The first tour was about the young Chinese men brought to Canada...

Aug 16, 2012 - Mac the Moose
Regina, SK. This was another travel day. We are still in prairie country and again drove past immense fields of wheat and huge piles of hay bales. There are a lot of pothole lakes in this area, too. Our diversion for the day was in Moose Jaw. Residents of Moose Jaw are known as Moose Javians. Moose Jaw is also the birthplace of Art Linkletter, is a NATO flight training school, and is home to the Snowbirds, Canada's military aerobatic air show flight demonstration team. The major draw for us, however, is the fact that Moose Jaw is home to...

Jul 29, 2012 - Day 14 - Edmonton to Regina
We had breakfast with John & Sandra Hulleman at Cora`s Restaurant. We have never eaten at one of these places before and the food is mountains of beautifully prepared fruit with eggs, waffles or pancakes. Beautiful and good for you. On the road by 11am and had an uneventful drive to Regina. Okay Tracy - I am caught up now.

Jul 11, 2012 - Regina - rest day
Day twenty one – rest day-July 11 Regina This was a most welcome rest day. After three days of fighting through head winds and staving off heat exhaustion this day was warranted. I didn’t crawl out of my tent until after 7am. There were a few riders up doing some foraging of the breakfast stuff but most of the tents remained occupied. It wouldn’t be till late morning that the tent city became active with its citizens walking around from tent to breakfast table to truck back to tent back to a bench to ponder what had gone down the previous...

Jul 10, 2012 - Regina
Day twenty-July 10 Regina 129k It would be another hot windy day. I would not get out of camp until 8:45. As I was part of the meal crew we were also responsible for cleaning up the site and getting everything into the truck. At a quarter of nine the staff told us to go. There were only a couple of other riders in the camp. They would be the sweeps. I set off. It was starting to heat up and the head wind we have been fighting for the last two days hasn’t given up. Neither am I. Highway 11 has stretches with wide shoulder and then that...

Sep 5, 2011 - Regina, SK (Day 2) - Saskatchewan Legislative Bldg. & Picnic
(Ron Writing) We enjoyed beautiful weather and a fun Labor Day (here it’s Labour Day) in Regina. We drove to the central part of the city to tour the Legislative Building. The Legislative Building is located at a beautiful park surrounding a lake and there was a Labour Day Picnic celebration nearby in the park. So we spent several hours in the area enjoying the nice weather and some of the events at the picnic. The Saskatchewan Legislative Building is considered to be one of the most impressive government buildings in Canada. We’ve only...

Sep 4, 2011 - Regina, SK - Another Drive Over the Prairie
(Ron Writing) Our original plan was to drive the Yellowhead HW all the way east to where it ends near Winnipeg, Manitoba but we want a different picture. Driving through the rolling farmland is nice but after awhile it’s like watching reruns! This morning we decided to head southeast on Highway 11 from Saskatoon to Regina (Ra-gee-na). This highway also runs through mostly farmland but at least there are a few small towns along the way to add some variety to the scenery. There were hardly any rest stops along the highway but several small...

Aug 18, 2011 - Rolling on to Regina
Yep, we got the rain overnight and it was still raining when we got up this morning. We weren’t in any big rush since we had only 175 miles to drive to Regina. Joe dodged the showers and got the utilities disconnected. We did our light and roll check and we were on the way around 9:30 a.m. The good news is the rain had settled all the dust and the ground is hard packed enough that it wasn’t muddy. However, both the motor home and Jeep will be trashed by the time we drive out of the rain and wind. The traffic through Saskatoon wasn’t too...

Jul 14, 2011 - Regina - Grayson, SK
The journal can't seem to find Grayson but it's a real town with great folks. July14 – Day 22 – Regina - Grayson K’s 164k Time 7h13m Average speed: 22.71 k/H T to d 2047k We had an early breakfast in camp at Regina and rode out at around 6:20 am. As the days ride would be over a century ride and with thunder showers and some rough roads in the offering we decided to get on the road very early. I think this will be the pattern for days with this many k’s to ride. While the thunder showers did not mature we did ride in heavy mist for...
