Jun 30, 2013 - Outook (SK) to Craik (SK)

The forecast for today was for strong winds from the East, so most of the group decided to leave early again. Megan had breakfast ready by 5:30 am, so John, Angela, Harry and I left at 6:00 am. We headed out from our campground in Outlook and continued along Highway 15 to Kenaston (blizzard capital of Saskatchewan and home to Canada's tallest freestanding snowman statue), where we stopped at a cafe for a second breakfast. It was then onto Highway 11 to Craik. The winds picked up through the day and were 40-45 km/h (with stronger gusts) by...

Jul 9, 2012 - Craik

Day Nineteen-July 9 Craik 124k This was another day of being able to see for miles and miles and miles. I wasn’t in too much of a hurry to get going because the ride for the day was a paltry 120km. Do that on any day comfortably. I left the campsite at 7:30 with Old Bob O (Obo). I had to be in camp by at least four in the afternoon because I am on cook crew for the evening. I felt I had plenty of time even though the weather would be as yesterday. Hot and in your face. And the terrain was the same. Once again Obo and I forsake drafting...

Checking the ditches

Jul 11, 2011 - Craik

July 11 - Day 19 – Outlook to Craik Sk K’s 126.52 k Time 5h55m Average speed: 21.36/H T to D 1744k OK so we had 3 real good days with the wind at our back. So did we really need an east wind just to toughen us up? I think not but the wind gods had other ideas and we had a nasty little wind all day, in our face or just off our face as we rode. Actually the first 60 k was not as much of a challenge but as the day wore on the wind increased did and so the challenge. From average speeds of 35 k/h the day before down to 21.36 today. Lunch...

Jul 10, 2008 - Trailer Repair/Maintenance

We dropped the trailer off at Village RV to have the wheel bearings packed and the underneath parts all checked. While doing so, they discovered the shackles that sit on the axle were badly worn so they changed them as well. This was a bigger job than originally planned and took all day to complete. Thank goodness they got it done in the one day. We’re also thankful the problem was discovered during a check, not when we were flying down the highway! Reba spent the day at the vet for her teeth cleaning and Midas and Gino hung out with us. We...

Jul 9, 2008 - 19 Craik SK

Today started as a leisurely ride for the 119 km to Craik. The highlight stop for the day was Kenaston, the self proclaimed blizzard capital of Saskatchewan. The cyclists took the town's small café by surprise, but the owners were up to the task of serving second breakfasts to waves of cyclists. An abandoned one room school house provided a photo op. After Brendon said, " at least there isn't a dog outside the farm house", we heard a deep "woof" and saw a large black dog running down the driveway. It turned out to be a large friendly lab...

The Howell's Travels

May 14, 2008 - Visit with Krista (Craik, SK)

We spent two days/nights camped in daughter Krista’s backyard near Craik. The weather is finally warming up and Fran and I enjoyed playing nine holes of golf at the Craik golf course this morning. It is quite challenging with three holes played over ravines, lots of elevation change and long holes. Cheyenne (almost 5) and Layne (3) went to pre-school this morning. One year-old Autumn has some new teeth and is learning to stand. Tristan (12) is in grade 7 and definitely growing up. We had a good time playing with the kids and dogs and...

Aug 19, 2007 - Craik, Saskatchewan

We hooked up the boat to the back of the trailer this morning (this means the Vespa stays behind) and headed North to Krista & Todd's acreage at Craik, Saskatchewan. We stopped for lunch with Fran's Mom at the nursing home in Assiniboia and in Moose Jaw for some groceries. Krista cooked us a delicious roast beef supper and we settled in behind her house for a few days.
