May 5, 2011 - Opera House on the border

Despite the rain we visited the small border town of Stanstead in particular the Haskell Library & Opera house. The building was built between 1901 and 1904 on the boundary line separating Canada and the U.S. The building was the gift of Martha Haskell and her son Horace Haskell to the border communities of Stanstead, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont. The Haskell is very unique. People from either side of the border may enter the building without passing through customs. However they must park their car outside the building in the country...
