Sep 5, 2009 - Cavendish, PEI

September 5 – Saturday A more relaxing day for us as we spent time seeing some of the sights around Cavendish so didn’t have to drive very far. This morning we toured Avonlea Village of Anne of Green Gables. The schoolhouse where Lucy Maud Montgomery taught in 1896 and the church she attended are preserved on this site. It was interesting reading about LM Montgomery, who published her first novel, Anne Of Green Gables in 1908. It became an instant bestseller. By the time she died, Montgomery had published 22 novels. Quite an amazing lady....

Sep 4, 2009 - Enjoying PEI

Sept 4 – Friday Another gorgeous sunny day for us to tour more of this beautiful Island. Our first stop of the day was at Walmart and then on to the harbor at Summerside and to the Baywalk at Spinnakers’ Landing. We didn’t walk the 6.5 km boardwalk but we did enjoy the little shops and a lunch at the waterfront. Driving around the south west tip we stopped at Cap-Egmont for a visit to the Bottle Houses. Three fanciful buildings are made of more than 25,000 glass bottles of various shapes, colors and sizes with a lovely flower garden...

Sep 3, 2009 - North Cape, Potatoe Museum

September 3 – Thursday Our taste of Celtic music last night was a very enjoyable evening. The Ceilidh (a Celtic word for a gathering of people and pronounced “kay-lee”) by the Ross Family - 4 young siblings on piano, drums, guitar and fiddle playing PEI roots music along with their trademark stepdancing made for an awesome evening. A gorgeous, sunny but a bit windy day today for us to tour this beautiful province. We were truly awed as we drove along the North Cape Coastal Drive to North Cape, the northwestern tip of Prince Edward Island....

Sep 2, 2009 - Welcome to PEI

September 2 – Wednesday A beautiful sunny day as we drove along the eastern coast of New Brunswick to make our way to PEI. It was only 142 kms to our destination at Cavendish, PEI but it took a lot longer than the 1 ¾ hours the GPS said it would take. First stop was at Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick to have a good view of the Confederation Bridge we were about to cross. This is the longest bridge over ice-covered waters in the world at 12.9 kilometers breaching the Northumberland Strait. It certainly is an amazing structure with its huge...

Aug 19, 2009 - Tour Prince Edward Island

Today we crossed the Confederation Bridge onto Prince Edward Island (PEI). The Confederation Bridge is a 13km long bridge across the Northumberland Strait and it is designed to withstand the ice floes that form on the strait during the winter months. We were headed first to Cavendish, the site of Green Gables, the house from Anne of Green Gables. On the way we found a toy factory, which we stopped at. This was a small house that was used as both a shop and a workshop for making wooden toys. The toys from this workshop were used by Disney in...

Canada Summer 2009

Aug 5, 2009 - Cavendish

We moved to the north side of the island today to put us in a more central location to see the rest of the island and to put a little more infrastructure around us for shopping, activities, dining out, etc. Since PEI is the smallest of the Canadian provinces, going from the south to the north side of the island was about a 35-mile drive....and that was taking the long way around. The drive was uneventful except for a little construction tie up at one of the intersections; we were delayed maybe 15 minutes or so. We are at the KOA in...

Jul 29, 2009 - The Land of Ann of Green Gables

The location of the Anne of Green Gables books was centered in the Cavendish area as was the birthplace of the author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. I have watched parts of the TV movie about Ann but never the entire movie but as I recall the scenery was outstanding and in real time it is pretty awesome. We could not mentally get into the museums and birthplace home of the author but did enjoy the scenic area the books featured. We have been somewhat surprised by Prince Edward Island after spending the past three weeks in some remote areas of Nova...

Jul 28, 2009 - Cavendish Prince Edward Island

Our trip today took us out of Nova Scotia and into New Brunswick then across the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island. Prior to the bridge being built the island was linked only by ferry to the mainland. The Confederation Bridge joins the eastern Canadian provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, making travel throughout the Maritimes easy and convenient. The curved, 12.9 kilometers (8 mile) long bridge is the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water, and a decade after its construction, it endures as one of...

Jul 11, 2009 - Oyster Bay Bridge, PEI

July 11, 2009 camped over We had to move the trailer up to dry camping today as the spot we were on was already reserved and they had nothing available so he let us go up the hill and dry camp and looking back beyond the campground we had a beautiful view of the water. Once we got settled we drove into Charlottetown and we drove over the see the Cow’s Ice Cream Creamery, however they were not making ice cream so seemed useless to take the tour so we left there and headed down to downtown Charlottetown and we walked the wharf which was...

Jun 23, 2009 - Day 15 Cavendish, PEI

Yesterday afternoon, in a heavy rain, we drove to Charlottetown. We found Walmart, the only one on the island and then we found the Confederation Centre during afternoon rush hour. Charlottetown is a beautiful city. It has a large harbor and accommodates large cruise ships from all over the world. It was the first city in Canada. We ate at the Dublin's Pub, right next to the Confederation Centre, where we also found the Fantasy Tour group eating. It seems that they are following us (or maybe we are following them)ha! We sat at the table...

Jun 22, 2009 - Day 14, Cavendish, PEI

We got up to rain and high winds this morning but we plan to do everything as planned, just dress accordingly. We visited the Canadian National Historic Site of Green Gables, this morning. This is where Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up and was inspired to write "Anne of Green Gables" and numerous other books. We took several pictures of the home and farm as they have been completely restored. We walked the paths that she wrote about in her books; Lovers lane, Balsam Hollow and the Haunted woods. We have tickets to the musical tonight at the...
