Aug 17, 2019 - Sault Ste. Marie Bush Plane Museum

We crossed the border into Ontario with no problem. The agent asked us where we were going and Ray handed him our itinerary and he was amazed. Had never seen an itinerary like that before but it gave him an idea of what we planned in Canada and that it was part of a longer trip so we got in with very few questions and no inspection at all. We are at the same KOA we stayed before in the same site we had before - it's long enough for us and we get 2 of the 3 Dish channels - there are lots of trees. The trailer next to us has lots of people...

Sep 1, 2018 - Sault Ste. Marie

September 1, 2018 Awoke to intermittent rain which will be fine as we plan to do indoor activities including the library! Bob has Vintage House work and I can always take advantage of good WiFi. We have become so familiar with SSM from our walk yesterday we knew exactly how to get to the Mill Market a delightful farmer’s market where locals come to socialize over coffee, shopping etc. There was a good mix of produce, meats, honeys, syrups, jams and artisan works. We helped the economy by buying tomatoes, potatoes, cheese and ground chorizo...

Aug 31, 2018 - Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

August 31, 2018 Made pancakes for breakfast as a “Bob” treat primarily because we have an outdoor sink for dishwashing. Such a small pleasure in camp!! Drove into Wawa for gas and to visit the Visitor Center which was very interesting. All throughout the small town there were massive duck statues on or in front of buildings. (Pictures are so slow in loading that I can’t show all). We learned that the folks had no access out of town other than steamboat or train until 1960 when the final link of the Trans-Canada Hwy was built. (Across from...

Oct 7, 2017 - Mackinaw Bridge

We had a nice rain during the night. Feel bad for all the tenters! We had a quick breakfast of cereal and fruit and on the road. Went to Presque Isle and walked around the park. It was raining but we were armed with umbrellas. Walked over to see the Black Cliffs, even tho they looked red to us. On thru Marquette and followed Lake Superior for about 60 miles. Again roads are fine- traffic a little heavier for the weekend. It was raining quite hard. We were in the Upper Peninsula- heard of it many times and now we are there. It quit raining...

Our trip east.

Jun 25, 2017 - Sault Ste Marie

It was a long tiring day & by the time I got home I was too tired to write up my diary. I took an all-day excursion train ride north 180 km (114 miles) into the Ontario wilderness to Agawa Canyon Park which is so remote that there are no roads & the only way you can get to it is by train. I had to be at the Sault Ste Marie station at 7:30am which meant I set the alarm for 6:15am. Stupidly, I woke up at 4:15 & couldn’t get back to sleep so I was tired before I started. The 4 hour train ride was fantastic, through forests, around lakes &...

Canada 2017

Jun 24, 2017 - Sault Ste Marie

I wasn’t planning on going anywhere today because rain was forecast & I also felt like a rest but this morning was beautifully sunny so I felt I shouldn’t waste it. First of all though I spent some time planning what I would do this week because it’s been on my mind that next weekend is a big weekend & I should have a reservation somewhere. July 1st is Canada Day & because this is Canada’s 150th birthday, they’re making a big deal of it. It’s a long weekend so it would be busy anyway but it will be extra busy this year. Added to that, it’s...

Canada 2017

Jun 23, 2017 - Wawa to Sault Ste Marie

Still beautiful driving along the north shore of Lake Superior. It was foggy this morning which apparently is common at this time of year when the air temperature warms quicker than the water. It made for some fantastic views though. I came across a sign pointing to the Agawa Rock pictographs which I thought was worth a stop. I met a couple in the parking lot who had just come back & they told me it was a pretty rough track & a bit scary to actually get to the rock art but there were other people in front of me so I gave it a go. The path...

May 16, 2017 - water in, water out

Sault Ste. Marie was the next stop on this sojourn and after much confusion and several wrong turns and detours (who knew you could get lost in Sault Ste. Marie!) we finally bumbled onto the tourist info centre. All our trips down alleys and into (and out of) neighbourhoods that AREN’T on Sault Ste. Marie’s guide books turned out to be fortuitous as we had killed enough time that the tourist info centre was open by the time we got there! Our destination was the Canadian lock that allows boat traffic between Lake Superior and Lake Huron...

May 15, 2017 - lets move to Harmony Bay

Big travel day today, hitting the road early as we made our way around the top of Lake Superior. It was a beautiful sunny day which made the many countless lakes we passed, with their many cabins perched beside the water, look inviting. This is outdoorsman heaven as apparently there is lots of fish in the lakes and although there are also lots of moose crossing signs on the road we never actually saw a moose. We stopped in Marathon & had lunch at Pebble Beach. This turned out to be a great spot on the lake with the coolest rocks that are...

Jun 8, 2016 - Fly me to the Moon or just Water

We have gotten to the "Soo", Sault St Marie as listed on the Maps. We had to visited the Bush Planes Museum, I know a couple of my friends would be fascinated. The main focus was on the Infamous Beaver and CF 215 and 415 water bombers. The video and displays for firefighting were more interesting than one might think, especially with the Fort Mac fire. Dr Roberta Bondar, was born in the Soo. Canada's First Female Astronuat, what more can be said, Read hear. Then after a great lunch at Muios, a well know, famous, historical old restaurant...

June 7, Tuesday Got up early, hit the road by 08:10 Gas up at White river, which is where Winnie the Pooh was born - OUR HALF WAY POINT. 3200 KILOMETRES - 21 DAYS Camping & Gas is not cheap in Ontario. The trip from Wawa to Sault ST Marie the drive was spectacular, this is just a sample of what the Cabot Trail will be like. There were 5 road construction delays today. Arrived at 15:00 in the Walmart parking lot. Pretty quite on North west side of town. Sault St Marie, was a pulp mill town, in addition to the first lock on the Great...

Jun 6, 2016 - Near Sault Ste Marie

Finally have some internet again. We have been in lots of dead spots for the cell phone and then our relatives in Winnipeg do not have computers. We are currently in Sault St Marie at a campsite that promised WiFi but it went down so I am making this draft and hopefully can post it tonight. We have had a chance to visit with some people we haven't seen for 8 months, 3 years, six years and some for over 50 years. We have had rain everyday since we left and only a few hours here and there of sunlight. It is quite disappointing as we took this...
