A National Historic site on St Joseph Island east of Sault Ste Marie. The British built the fort on St Joseph Island because of its proximity to Fort Michiliamacknac and to the busiest navigation routes of the Great Lakes. The fort was constructed in 1797/8 and played a defensive role with its primary purpose to protect the fur trade from the Americans.
