Mar 27, 2009 - ... and Toronto...

Thursday, March 26 (22:00 Vancouver time) Here we are in Toronto (Lester B. Pearson International Airport) waiting for our flight to Ottawa. We left Singapore around 15:30 yesterday afternoon (Thursday), and arrived in Vancouver around 17:30 on Thursday -- sounds like it was a two hour flight!!! In reality, we had been travelling for almost 17 hours, and after a five hour lay-over in Vancouver, and the over-night flight to Toronto and then on to Ottawa in the early hours of the morning, we will have been travelling for over 28 hours.

Calgary to Vancouver

Jan 13, 2009 - Here we go... the adventure begins!

It seems that we just returned from our Christmas trip to Wales, and we did -- just two weeks ago! It was good to see Uncle Ron and Peggy and my (Gary's) second cousin Christopher and his fiancee Katie in Chichester, Heather's nephew Carl and his mother Ursula in Bridgwater, and to spend Christmas with Menna (Heather's mother) and our Welsh friends in Cardigan. We are now ready to fly to Australia. We have finished our packing and everything (tickets, clothes, snorkels, masks, computer, mobile phone, cameras and MP3 player) are all packed....

Sep 25, 2008 - We are in Ottawa!

Hi Friends. We took a few photos but I do not have them loaded into our computer to put them on line. I will see if I can load them afterwards....will try. We had a wonderful time in Abbotsford, Mission, Port Moody visiting friends and relatives. Then off to Richmond to a fabulous room in a hotel near the airport. Tuesday morning we headed to the airport for our 10:30 a.m. flight. Westjet was great - again. We have been so pleased each time we flew with them. The staff have always been helpful and very friendly. We had complimentary snacks,...

Sep 18, 2008 - Ottawa

We were hoping to have a chance to see Anil’s old friends Cecile and Louise Latour as we passed through the Ottawa region. He first met them when they arrived in Edmoton to teach French at an elementary school and Anil arrived to study at the University of Alberta in 1968. Our paths have crossed several times over the years, in both planned and unplanned ways, but this would have been an opportunity to celebrate 40 years of friendship. Unfortunately, Cecile and her husband David were off touring Newfoundland and we were not travelling...

Sep 12, 2008 - Time 2 Drive

Can you say, "Sore butt and rattled brains?" I'll look at it this way: we had lots of time today to practice using the new GPS, assuming it didn't bounce out of our hands! Our 6 hour driving day took 10 hours from departure to arrival. The school bus accident on the TransCanada didn't help. We had to reroute while we prayed for the poor souls involved. The grocery shopping on the way was as efficient as it could have been; while Mom made lunch, we bought the groceries. We also rented a vehicle on our way into Ottawa. We luckily barely...

Sep 6, 2008 - T-minus 1 day

The countdown is on..in just over 24 hours I'll be on my flight, and on my way to Bordeaux! I'm just about packed, although it seems like there's a lot of last minute stuff. I finally think I have all the documents I need for them to let me in the country..and maybe more importantly, stay there for 9 months..we'll see I guess lol. I've double checked lists, made extra copies of important documents..and I think I've packed all my shoes. So I should be ready to go. Tomorrow morning I'm off to Montreal to have one last family get together, and...

Sep 5, 2008 - Friday 9/05/08 Ottawa, Ontario

Friday 9/05/08 Ottawa, Ontario Today we drove into Ottawa (17 Km) as tourists. After parking the car,we took a tour bus ride around the city after which we went to the By Ward Market for lunch and to walk around. The By Ward Market is an outdoor farmer’s market surrounded by shops selling anything and everything from fish to flowers to paintings to clothing all surrounded by at least 100 restaurants and night-clubs. At noon, the place was jammed with people. After the tour, we went to the Parliament house but were too late for the tour. The...

Sep 4, 2008 - Thursday 0/04/08 Sturgeon Falls to Ottawa

Thursday 0/04/08 Sturgeon Falls, Ontario We got a late start, leaving about 11am planning to drive to Ottawa today, about 240 miles. The drive is very pretty; rolling hills with lakes and the river along side Canada highway 17. We arrive at Popular Grove Campground and after setting up; Cherie was defrosting dinner when I noticed that the u-wave didn't sound right. I got out the power monitor and noted that the voltage with the u-wave off was 112 volts with the u-wave off and was 100 volts with the u-wave off; a potentially damaging...

Sep 2, 2008 - Arrival home in Ottawa

So we made it! We lucked out and got stand-by seats from Paris. It was a very long and emotional journey home. Our entire year weighed very heavily on us as we came to realize that so many of our friends and family would be wanting to know what it all meant to us. That will certainly take some time to figure out. It seems as though there were really two trips - the travel before Africa, and then our time in Africa. They were such different experiences. Kind of like we got two trips of a lifetime in one year. We underestimated the impact of...
