Sep 18, 2008 - Ottawa

We were hoping to have a chance to see Anil’s old friends Cecile and Louise Latour as we passed through the Ottawa region. He first met them when they arrived in Edmoton to teach French at an elementary school and Anil arrived to study at the University of Alberta in 1968. Our paths have crossed several times over the years, in both planned and unplanned ways, but this would have been an opportunity to celebrate 40 years of friendship. Unfortunately, Cecile and her husband David were off touring Newfoundland and we were not travelling...

Sep 12, 2008 - Time 2 Drive

Can you say, "Sore butt and rattled brains?" I'll look at it this way: we had lots of time today to practice using the new GPS, assuming it didn't bounce out of our hands! Our 6 hour driving day took 10 hours from departure to arrival. The school bus accident on the TransCanada didn't help. We had to reroute while we prayed for the poor souls involved. The grocery shopping on the way was as efficient as it could have been; while Mom made lunch, we bought the groceries. We also rented a vehicle on our way into Ottawa. We luckily barely...

Sep 6, 2008 - T-minus 1 day

The countdown is on..in just over 24 hours I'll be on my flight, and on my way to Bordeaux! I'm just about packed, although it seems like there's a lot of last minute stuff. I finally think I have all the documents I need for them to let me in the country..and maybe more importantly, stay there for 9 months..we'll see I guess lol. I've double checked lists, made extra copies of important documents..and I think I've packed all my shoes. So I should be ready to go. Tomorrow morning I'm off to Montreal to have one last family get together, and...

Sep 5, 2008 - Friday 9/05/08 Ottawa, Ontario

Friday 9/05/08 Ottawa, Ontario Today we drove into Ottawa (17 Km) as tourists. After parking the car,we took a tour bus ride around the city after which we went to the By Ward Market for lunch and to walk around. The By Ward Market is an outdoor farmer’s market surrounded by shops selling anything and everything from fish to flowers to paintings to clothing all surrounded by at least 100 restaurants and night-clubs. At noon, the place was jammed with people. After the tour, we went to the Parliament house but were too late for the tour. The...

Sep 4, 2008 - Thursday 0/04/08 Sturgeon Falls to Ottawa

Thursday 0/04/08 Sturgeon Falls, Ontario We got a late start, leaving about 11am planning to drive to Ottawa today, about 240 miles. The drive is very pretty; rolling hills with lakes and the river along side Canada highway 17. We arrive at Popular Grove Campground and after setting up; Cherie was defrosting dinner when I noticed that the u-wave didn't sound right. I got out the power monitor and noted that the voltage with the u-wave off was 112 volts with the u-wave off and was 100 volts with the u-wave off; a potentially damaging...

Sep 2, 2008 - Arrival home in Ottawa

So we made it! We lucked out and got stand-by seats from Paris. It was a very long and emotional journey home. Our entire year weighed very heavily on us as we came to realize that so many of our friends and family would be wanting to know what it all meant to us. That will certainly take some time to figure out. It seems as though there were really two trips - the travel before Africa, and then our time in Africa. They were such different experiences. Kind of like we got two trips of a lifetime in one year. We underestimated the impact of...

Aug 19, 2008 - Back in Ottawa

Well, we made it back to Ottawa. We're going to be staying in the motorhome up at Ruth's parents near Arnprior for the next 6 to 8 weeks, and then we'll be taking off towards Mexico for the winter. I'll post the odd update here during that time period.

Aug 19, 2008 - Ottawa,Ontario

We camped at Fitzroy Provincial Park about 40 miles west of Canada's capital, Ottawa. Ottawa was wonderful!!! We spent 2 days exploring it and believe it is one of the most beautiful cities we have seen. It is primarily a "government city" most people who live there have a government or service industry job. It is probably the cleanest city we have ever visited. Visiting it in the summer, one might consider moving there, unless you check to see that the average high in the winter is under 20 degrees. Hard to imagine with the beautiful...

Aug 10, 2008 - Rest Day in Ottawa

Total Distance to Date: 5369 kms Another welcome rest day, this time in Ottawa. We only had four riding days since our last rest day but tomorrow we start with the longest ride of the tour at 176 kms. That ride is from Ottawa to Hudson, P.Q. It is downhill on the map so lets hope that is a reality. We have been in Ontario for about three weeks and we have enjoyed much of the province. We have travelled along the shores of Lakes Superior, Huron, and Ontario, as well as along parts of the St. Lawrence River and the Rideau Canal. Now it is...

Aug 10, 2008 - Friends and Family to the rescue!

Good morning everyone! After a brief morning shower, the sun is shining here in Ottawa for my day-off. It was hard to find an adequate title for this entry but I think the one I have selected will do! Since my last day off in Alliston, I've cycled 502 Ks for a total trip distance of 5483 Ks. That's as accurate as I can get it. We had a fair amount of rain and my cycle computer decided to take a rest for a while so I may be short a few K's. But it's close. So - there were only 4 days of riding in this section. We went from Alliston (nr....
