Jul 28, 2008 - Subury to Ottawa, Ontario

We had a nice drive from Sudbury to Ottawa, passing through/by North Bay, Chalk River, Petawawa, etc. The first part of the day’s travels were by lakes, rocks, trees etc. but mid-way we met the Ottawa River and followed the beautiful Ottawa Valley the rest of the way. There are lots of hayfields and dairy farms in this area. We were pleasantly surprised with the Ottawa Municipal Campground. It is in Kanata, just off highway 417 but set in a beautiful forest so you think you are off in the wilds. I put a few pictures of our site in the blog....

Jul 27, 2008 - Capital of Canada

500 miles into Canada and here we are in Ottawa, the Capital of Canada. We toured the federal government buildings today, as well as a "change of the guard" on the parade grounds of Parliament Hill. This is a beautiful city, and we "hit it right" with the weather today, as the pics will show. Hope you enjoy.

Jul 20, 2008 - Ottawa

We had picked Heathers Mum up from Toronto on 9 July after her 10 day trip through the Rocky Mountains. Making the most of her time with us and wanting to go also we headed to Ottawa for a few days. Ottawa is the capital of Canada, and lies 465km north/west of Guelph. We are quite optimistic when we decide to do these trips, thinking its not far. But need to take into account all the side trips we tend to do along the way! Hence it took us about 10 hours to get there! Peterborough is 200km on route which is the home of the Lift Lock. At...

Jul 20, 2008 - Ottawa

We spent one night in Ottawa with my cousin Baljeet, her husband Harry, and her kids. Harry took us around town for a tour of the city and we saw the Prime Ministers residence as well as the Canadian Parliament. We stopped in front of the Prime Ministers residence to take a picture and commented on how lax the security was in Canada compared to Washington DC where the road in front of the White House is shut down. As we moved on, Harry began getting a text message from his cousin who is in the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police). It turns...

Jul 17, 2008 - Getting there

My tour starts at Ottawa Airport at 5:00 am on July 17. I will be met by the three other women (Paula, Christina and Joan) from the Ottawa and Cornwall dioceses who will be my travel companions for the next two weeks. Hopefully we have all managed to guess at the kinds of clothes we will need for the coolness of the high Andes and the heat and humidity of the Ecuador coastline. We will be travelling a fair amount in a rented van, up and down in altitude almost every day, so altitude sickness and stomach upset might be a big part of my story.

Jul 16, 2008 - Ottawa, Ontario Canada, Day 2

Today I was the last one to wake up. But I was well rested. I got my clothes on and headed out the door. First we had breakfast and a lot of breakfast. It was a buffet in the hotel. My favorite part of it was when we got those little candy things at the end. Then we went and saw soldiers, well whatever they are called. And um, we went on a boat/bus tour. And we sailed on the water. It was fun. Except I couldn't sit by the window because Cavin wanted the window. After that we walked around the town. It was fun but I was a little thirsty at...

Jul 15, 2008 - Parliament Hill and the Ottawa Rapidz

What a full day! We were up at 7:30 to make it to Parliament Hill for 9 a.m. to see the changing of the guards here. Unfortunately it didn't start until 10 a.m. so we wandered into the "business" district and had breakie. Then we headed back to the hill to see the guard ceremony and laughed our heads off at the hats (I'll have pictures up soon I promise) Then we got our tickets to do the Centre Block tour (aka House of Commons, Senate, Peace Tower and Parliamentary Library) We had almost a 2 hour wait till our tour so we did a self guided...

Jul 15, 2008 - Canada's Capital Ottawa, Ontario

After spending a few days in places where I couldn't speak or understand the language, it was nice to come to a place where I could. I loved Quebec City and Montreal but it's nice to understand the street signs again and not have to point to things I needed. So here we are in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. What a beautiful city. We came in yesterday in time to see a little of the city and visit the Nature Museum. Of course, another fun filled day on this adventure we are all on. The weather is beautiful here. It feels like California. We are...

Jul 14, 2008 - Ottawa - cultural taste

Today we didn't get up and going until almost noon! It feels like a waste in some ways but we needed it and quite frankly - so did Robin and Quinn so I'm not worried about it. The only thing was that it shortened the amount of time we had to do the things we wanted to do today - which for Alee and I was an issue. When we ventured out today we split up - Robin taking Maren and Hayley to the Museum of Nature and Alee and I going to The National Art Gallery. I will have to ask Mraen and Hayley to write about the Museum although I will say that...

Jul 13, 2008 - To Ottawa we go!

We had to awake early in the morning which was not a popular thing but we made our 9:30 train and managed to get Starbucks before we got there with enough time to finish it before we got on the train. Everything about that worked out wonderfully - the Royal York is right across from Union Station with an underground tunnel to the station. We didn't feel a drop of the rain I think was falling. Once on the train we settled in 4 nice seats and leaned back for a nice ride. Coach seats are great and since the train originated in Toronto getting...

Jun 28, 2008 - Winnipeg, only 884 miles.

Luba arrived about 9:30 Friday night. Gary helped us packup her vehicle and off to bed. We were on the road to Edmonton by 8:30 then stopped at the CalTire to get the tires tightened. We then headed out onto the yellowhead hwy to Winnipeg. We were very lucky to have great weather. we stopped in Regina for a quick supper and noticed all the green foodball shirts. I said there mucst be a Riders Game tonight. So I called Gary and told him we were in Regina and were going to a game which of course he would never believe since I hate football....
