Aug 19, 2008 - Back in Ottawa

Well, we made it back to Ottawa. We're going to be staying in the motorhome up at Ruth's parents near Arnprior for the next 6 to 8 weeks, and then we'll be taking off towards Mexico for the winter. I'll post the odd update here during that time period.

Aug 19, 2008 - Ottawa,Ontario

We camped at Fitzroy Provincial Park about 40 miles west of Canada's capital, Ottawa. Ottawa was wonderful!!! We spent 2 days exploring it and believe it is one of the most beautiful cities we have seen. It is primarily a "government city" most people who live there have a government or service industry job. It is probably the cleanest city we have ever visited. Visiting it in the summer, one might consider moving there, unless you check to see that the average high in the winter is under 20 degrees. Hard to imagine with the beautiful...

Aug 10, 2008 - Friends and Family to the rescue!

Good morning everyone! After a brief morning shower, the sun is shining here in Ottawa for my day-off. It was hard to find an adequate title for this entry but I think the one I have selected will do! Since my last day off in Alliston, I've cycled 502 Ks for a total trip distance of 5483 Ks. That's as accurate as I can get it. We had a fair amount of rain and my cycle computer decided to take a rest for a while so I may be short a few K's. But it's close. So - there were only 4 days of riding in this section. We went from Alliston (nr....

Aug 10, 2008 - Rest Day in Ottawa

Total Distance to Date: 5369 kms Another welcome rest day, this time in Ottawa. We only had four riding days since our last rest day but tomorrow we start with the longest ride of the tour at 176 kms. That ride is from Ottawa to Hudson, P.Q. It is downhill on the map so lets hope that is a reality. We have been in Ontario for about three weeks and we have enjoyed much of the province. We have travelled along the shores of Lakes Superior, Huron, and Ontario, as well as along parts of the St. Lawrence River and the Rideau Canal. Now it is...

Aug 10, 2008 - 50 Ottawa - rest

As a rest day this day was not very restful. When I went out to my car to get my baskets of cycling clothes, etc, I discovered that I had accidentally not locked the car the night before. It had been ransacked, the glove box contents were on the floor, the parking change was gone, a shaving kit with spare glasses, spare sun glasses and my prescription medication was gone, and as I discovered after double checking that I had not accidentally left it at Carleton University my duffle bag with tent, sleeping bag, Thermarest, spare parts,...

Aug 9, 2008 - 50 Ottawa

This was to be a home coming day. I got to sleep in my own house. As I result I had decided to push ahead on my own. Sometimes haste makes waste and I wasn't paying attention to Bud's cue sheet and missed a turn. Rather than back track I used my GPS to figure where I was and how to get back on course. Just south west of Manotick our route used the same road as the MS fund raising tour but they were headed in the opposite direction. I used the rest room at on of their checkpoints, checked their map and plotted my route home. Although Bud's...

Aug 8, 2008 - Ottawa

4 days of intence museum going. We do love museums as you all know but this was a very packed time. the war museum is AWSOME. Very modern in its ability to properly use interactive displays. Excelent visual effects. Information presented to all levels of interest and ages. Could not be better. Of course we do still have kids and the eality is that we promissed them to se the movie wally in the afternoon so...as is the life with kids, we had to leave the best museum of the summer before we were done to see a movie. However, i should not...

Aug 4, 2008 - Capital idea.

I have to start uploading photographs one of these days! We've been in our Nations capital for nearly a week now. Finally the driving adventures have dropped. It's considerably harder to have a driving adventure when you don't move. Fuel consumption is way down too, although we've worn a bit of rubber off the Ion tires. Can you imagine that we've filled the tank twice on it since leaving home? We've had something to do every day since we've been here, but we haven't seen all the people we want to see yet. Strangely, people who are still...

Roaming through 2008

Aug 3, 2008 - Ottawa

Good trip today. Drove part of the way along the St Lawrence River which was good. Arrived at an RV Park about 20 miles outside Ottawa which is quiet and only $15 a night so that is great. The owners are lovely and we can wash our car and RV here so they should be nice and clean for when we get to Montreal. We may well stay here for 4 nights and then go straight to Alicia’s but haven’t decided yet. The only problem is that I don’t have internet and so cannot put this onto the journal. I wanted to get up to date but doesn’t look like that...

Jul 30, 2008 - Day 57 to Day 60

Day 57 Today’s Plan; glue the vent, Go to Ottawa. The next morning, Chuck and I tackle the epoxy job on the vent cover. It goes well but is slow to set up. We put it in the sun in the green house. The heat helps and the epoxy is dry to touch but still soft by noon when we are ready to leave. The sun is shining, so I put the cover in the back of the truck to finish curing. We hug and shake and agree to not let 10 years go by before we see each other again. We leave following directions given to us and are soon rolling along Northeast on a...

Jul 28, 2008 - Subury to Ottawa, Ontario

We had a nice drive from Sudbury to Ottawa, passing through/by North Bay, Chalk River, Petawawa, etc. The first part of the day’s travels were by lakes, rocks, trees etc. but mid-way we met the Ottawa River and followed the beautiful Ottawa Valley the rest of the way. There are lots of hayfields and dairy farms in this area. We were pleasantly surprised with the Ottawa Municipal Campground. It is in Kanata, just off highway 417 but set in a beautiful forest so you think you are off in the wilds. I put a few pictures of our site in the blog....

Jul 28, 2008 - Canada - Ottawa

Today we continued our drive along Lake Ontario and re-entered Canada late in the afternoon near the 1000 Islands. It looks lovely here; maybe we can come back on the way back to Toronto. We headed for Ottawa after realising that it would take a little too long to drive to Montreal. While in Ottawa we went for a walk along the Rideau Canal, had a look at the huge Parliament that sits on Parliament Hill and even had our photo taken with a Mountie and her trusty steed.
