Sep 15, 2012 - Drive back to London

Heading out from Tobermory on our last day, we began with a leisurely scenic drive following the waterfront on our way back to London. We made several stops including great lunch at the restaurant at Walter's Falls. With this trip to the Bruce Peninsula, I began a new quest.... to discover the best butter tarts in Ontario. Now if you're from the U.S. you may not know about butter tarts..... I didn't. But Canadians couldn't believe I had never eaten a butter tart. So I had to keep trying them everywhere! The winner was a small bakery just...

Living Our Dream

Sep 7, 2012 - Canada Trip - Part 1

As I'm writing this on Nov 5 it's hard to believe it's been almost 2 months since I arrived in Canada for my 2 1/2 week visit there. The main purpose of my trip was to visit my good friends, Kathy & Larry, who lived in Panama City for a number of years before moving back to their native Canada. The secondary purpose was that I was to speak at their Unity Church on 2 of the Sundays that I was there. Larry met me at the airport in Detroit & then drove the 2 1/2 hour drive to their home town of London, Ontario. They are situated in the...

Living Our Dream

Jul 27, 2012 - Into Canada -- London, Ontario

We rode over the Blue Water bridge to Canada today. The bridge authority closed the whole Canada bound part for us to ride over. I was shocked. I was also glad to get on the side roads right away before the truckers caught up with us. This part of Ontario is a lot like lower Michigan, except the farms are tidier (most of the time). I have driven the route from Niagara Falls to Port Huron dozens of times. I had never seen the area from the perspective we did today. Some interesting towns and quiet lanes.

Sep 17, 2011 - London KOA

Calculated gas was $4.78 per gallon in Ontario. Good road. Really like the service center along the freeway. They has a brand new building that has various eateries. Starbucks, Tim Horton's, pizza place and others were renting space from the government. There was an old rest area next to the new one with grass and picnic tables but no body was there.

Land's RV Trip

Jul 18, 2011 - Our day in Canada

We had decided to make a trip up to London, Ont. To have some work done on our hitch at CanAm, the hitch specialists. We had heard Andy Thomson speak at the Alumapalooza and liked what he said about hitches and towing. Ken wanted our GM hitch welded because it was round and they tend to have the welds break, so reinforcement is good. Also, Andy recommended a weld on the hitch receiver. He had seen a few of these that had cracked. Andy also inspected our trailer and recommended some rivets be added to the front of the trailer. After all the...

Destination # 14: London, ON Mileage:260 k (from Tobermory) Arrive: Wednesday, June 29, 2011 Depart: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 • Wednesday, June 29  Great trip down from the Bruce Peninsula. As we move further down the peninsula, the scenery gives way to very lush farm and ranch land all along the way.  Stopped in Port Elgin for a bit of a rest and a walkabout. Port Elgin is a resort town on the shores of Lake Huron with a beautiful waterfront beach area. The weather was very windy so lots of wild waves crashing over the breakwater and...

Nascar Adventure

Dec 22, 2009 - Canada- Christmas 2009

Enjoying my Christmas in Canada so far!!! I'm in a place called St Thomas, Ontario, made famous by Jumbo the elephant and Rachel McAdams of Mean Girls fame. Believe it or not there's only the faintest hint of snow on the ground here, and so far it doesn't seem like there will be a white Christmas. Snow is due at the weekend, so in a reversed world there'll be a white Christmas in Ireland and none in Canada. C'est la vie! Have seen the whole Canadian family contingent and spending Christmas morning with the little ones (see photo for gift...

Sep 16, 2009 - London, Ontario

After leaving Chicago, we made a beeline for Canada and crossed at the Detroit/Windsor border crossing. This section of the journey was a trip down memory lane for Steve, who had lived in London a few years ago. We stopped in at Port Stanley on Lake Eerie where he had played many volleyball tournaments and had dinner at his favorite neighborhood restaurant “Angelo’s”. No surprises that it was pasta (and pretty damn good). We drove to Wasaga Beach in the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron and spent a relaxing day on the beach. Steve had a lot of...

Aug 19, 2009 - London

Sunday, August 16th – London Had a good visit with Gil and Sandy, though it got a bit expensive. I knew that I had a bit of an alignment problem with one of the tires on the trailer, but when we got to London, Jan suggested that the tire looked a bit low. She was right – nearly always – so I, well Gil, took the wheel off, and we put on the spare. I’d just take the tire with me to get the oil changed on the truck, and at the same time, finally get the front brakes checked. (I really wasn’t having serious problems with the brakes, but thought...
